2001. PUBLIC SPEAKING. 3 cr. The process <strong>of</strong> public communic<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />
including an understanding <strong>of</strong> audience to produce, evalu<strong>at</strong>e, and<br />
critique public expression in public arenas.<br />
2060. SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATION. 3 cr. Introduction to small<br />
group particip<strong>at</strong>ion and leadership. Small group variables included<br />
for study are group structure, clim<strong>at</strong>e, goals, roles, norms, conflict,<br />
and rhetorical sensitivity. Special emphasis given to applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />
concepts within problem-solving discussion groups.<br />
3005. ORAL INTERPRETATION. 3 cr. Oral reading <strong>of</strong> prose and poetry<br />
with emphasis on determining and interpreting the thought and<br />
emotional content <strong>of</strong> selections <strong>of</strong> liter<strong>at</strong>ure.<br />
3010. COMMUNICATION AND CONFLICT. 3 cr. A study <strong>of</strong> the theory<br />
and practice <strong>of</strong> communic<strong>at</strong>ion str<strong>at</strong>egies and styles in conflict<br />
situ<strong>at</strong>ions. The course will look <strong>at</strong> conflict in interpersonal and/<br />
or pr<strong>of</strong>ession settings. Prerequisites: CMST 1001, 1018, 2001 or<br />

3011. ARGUMENTATION AND DEBATE. 3 cr. Argument<strong>at</strong>ion as a<br />
method for critical inquiry. Emphasis on deb<strong>at</strong>e as argument<br />
exemplar with instruction in analysis, reasoning, and use <strong>of</strong><br />

3035. NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION. 3 cr. The process <strong>of</strong><br />
gener<strong>at</strong>ing and interpreting messages from such nonverbal<br />
sources as space, physical appearance, time, facial expressions,<br />
and other nonverbal codes explored for effects on interpersonal<br />
rel<strong>at</strong>ionships. Prerequisites: CMST 1001, 1018, or 2001.<br />
3041. COMMUNICATION AND GENDER. 3 cr. Explor<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> how<br />
gender and communic<strong>at</strong>ion interact, exploring how gender<br />
influences communic<strong>at</strong>ion, how gender is communic<strong>at</strong>ed, and<br />
how communic<strong>at</strong>ion influences our understandings <strong>of</strong> gender and<br />
wh<strong>at</strong> it means to be gendered beings. Prerequisites: CMST 1001,<br />
1018, or 3004 or approval <strong>of</strong> the instructor.<br />
3044. ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION. 3 cr. An introduction to the<br />
principles and theories <strong>of</strong> competent organiz<strong>at</strong>ional communic<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

4005. ADVANCED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION. 3 cr. Prepar<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />
delivery <strong>of</strong> the principal types <strong>of</strong> speeches, with some <strong>at</strong>tention<br />
to the miscellaneous types <strong>of</strong> speeches; rhetorical criticism. An<br />
effort is made to arrange outside speaking engagements for<br />
members <strong>of</strong> the class. Prerequisite: CMST 1010 or 2001.<br />
4050. COMMUNICATION THEORY. 3 cr. An analysis and evalu<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
<strong>of</strong> predominant communic<strong>at</strong>ion theories th<strong>at</strong> identify fundamental<br />
communic<strong>at</strong>ive forces in human action. Prerequisite: CMST 1001,<br />

cultures. Verbal and nonverbal code systems, social organiz<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
p<strong>at</strong>terns, values, and belief systems examined as they impact<br />
the sharing <strong>of</strong> meaning. Special <strong>at</strong>tention given to Health Care,<br />
Business, and Educ<strong>at</strong>ion contexts. Prerequisite: Communic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

4020. PERFORMANCE STUDIES. 3 cr. Theory and practice in the<br />
art <strong>of</strong> group oral present<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> liter<strong>at</strong>ure; selection, analysis,<br />
and arrangement <strong>of</strong> m<strong>at</strong>erials for oral interpret<strong>at</strong>ion; program<br />
planning for public present<strong>at</strong>ion; emphasis on Reader’s The<strong>at</strong>re.<br />

4026. HEALTH COMMUNICATION. 3 cr. The study <strong>of</strong> effective<br />
communic<strong>at</strong>ion perspectives and skills helpful in providing<br />
integr<strong>at</strong>ed, coordin<strong>at</strong>ed services between various allied health<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essions. Prerequisites: CMST 1018; 3010; 4004 or approval<br />

group action, interaction, and leadership designed to apply small<br />
