The Department <strong>of</strong> Kinesiology <strong>of</strong>fers an undergradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional teacher educ<strong>at</strong>ion concentr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

in health and physical educ<strong>at</strong>ion, and non-certific<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

concentr<strong>at</strong>ions in exercise science, exercise science/<br />

pre-physical therapy, and fitness and sports industry.<br />

Coursework for these areas is listed in the Courses <strong>of</strong><br />

Instruction section <strong>of</strong> this c<strong>at</strong>alog. For inform<strong>at</strong>ion on<br />

gradu<strong>at</strong>e programs in the Department <strong>of</strong> Kinesiology,<br />

<strong>Louisiana</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Monroe</strong>.<br />

Students expecting to earn the Bachelor’s degree<br />

in Kinesiology in the Health and Physical Educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

Certific<strong>at</strong>ion concentr<strong>at</strong>ion area must meet all eligibility<br />

requirements for initial licensure in <strong>Louisiana</strong> prior to<br />

student teaching and passing scores on PRAXIS I or a<br />

composite <strong>of</strong> 22 on the ACT and PRAXIS II. Kinesiology<br />

teacher candid<strong>at</strong>es must make a “C” or better in all<br />

courses counting towards their degree.<br />

Students expecting to earn the Bachelor’s degree<br />

in Kinesiology with a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in Exercise Science<br />

Pre-Physical Therapy are required to take the ACSM<br />

Health Fitness Specialist (HFS) examin<strong>at</strong>ion, or a<br />

departmentally-approved exit exam, as determined by<br />

their advisor.<br />

Students expecting to earn the Bachelor’s degree<br />

in Kinesiology with a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in Exercise Science<br />

are required to take the ACSM Health Fitness Specialist<br />

(HFS) examin<strong>at</strong>ion, or a departmentally-approved exit<br />

exam, as determined by their advisor.<br />

Students expecting to earn the Bachelor’s degree in<br />

Kinesiology with a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in Fitness and Sports<br />

Industry are required to take either the ACSM Certified<br />

Personal Trainer (CPT) examin<strong>at</strong>ion, the NSCA Certified<br />

Personal Trainer (CPT) examin<strong>at</strong>ion, the NSCA Certified<br />

Personal Trainer (CPT) examin<strong>at</strong>ion, or a departmentallyapproved<br />

exit exam, as determined by their advisor.<br />

Kinesiology majors must make a “C” or better in<br />

all Kinesiology courses counting towards their degree<br />

and are required to purchase and regularly upd<strong>at</strong>e their<br />

student account on TaskStream.<br />

KINESIOLOGY<br />

Concentr<strong>at</strong>ions include: Health and Physical Educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

Certific<strong>at</strong>ion, Exercise Science, Exercise Science/Pre-<br />

Physical Therapy, and Fitness and Sports Industry.<br />

The Health and Physical Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Certific<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

Concentr<strong>at</strong>ion prepares students to teach K-12 health<br />

and physical educ<strong>at</strong>ion by providing coursework and<br />

experiences in the areas <strong>of</strong> health and physical educ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Required for a major in Kinesiology with a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in<br />

Health and Physical Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Certific<strong>at</strong>ion: PSYC 2003,<br />

PSYC 2005; DANC 3001; ENGL 2005; HIST 1011; HIST<br />

2001 or 2002; PSYC 3001; CURR 2085, CURR 3086;<br />

KINS 2002, KINS 3006, KINS 3019, KINS 3033, KINS<br />

3034, KINS 3035, KINS 3055, KINS 4003, KINS 4017,<br />

KINS 4031, KINS 4046; CURR 3076, CURR 4084, CURR<br />

4056; READ 4019. — Total <strong>of</strong> 46 semester hours.<br />

The Exercise Science Concentr<strong>at</strong>ion prepares students<br />

for careers in applied and clinical preventive settings,<br />

including, but not limited to, cardiac rehabilit<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

hospital-based wellness programs, community fitness<br />

centers, or university and corpor<strong>at</strong>e wellness programs,<br />

as well as entry into gradu<strong>at</strong>e exercise science programs.<br />

Required for a major in Kinesiology with a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in<br />

Exercise Science: KINS 3018; KINS 4002, 4010 or 4041;<br />

KINS 4035; CHEM 1002, 1003, 1004; 6 hours <strong>of</strong> advisor<br />

or department head approved science electives; HLST<br />

2007 or NURS 2080 or MGMT 3001 or MGMT 3005 or<br />

CMST 2001 or ENGL 3021 or hlst 2001 or PSYC 2078<br />

or PSYC 4001 or PSYC 4010 or PHYS 3004. — Total <strong>of</strong><br />

43 semester hours.<br />

The Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy Concentr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

prepares students for the applic<strong>at</strong>ion process to physical<br />

therapy programs. However, it will also prepare students<br />

for careers in the applied and clinical preventive settings,<br />

including, but not limited to cardiac rehabilit<strong>at</strong>ion, hospitalbased<br />

wellness programs, community fitness centers, or<br />

university and corpor<strong>at</strong>e wellness programs. Required for<br />

a major in Kinesiology with a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in Exercise<br />

Science/Pre-Physical Therapy: KINS 3018, KINS 4002,<br />

KINS 4010 or 4041 or 4043 or 4044, KINS 4034, KINS<br />

4035; CHEM 1008, CHEM 1009, CHEM 1010; PHYS<br />

2003, PHYS 2004, PHYS 2009, PHYS 2010; PHYS 3004;<br />

BIOL 1014, BIOL 1015, BIOL 1016, BIOL 1017. — Total<br />

<strong>of</strong> 39 semester hours. Students intending to pursue entry<br />

into a physical therapy program will be required to take<br />

additional hours and make substitutions as recommended<br />

by their academic advisor.<br />

Fitness and Sports Industry Concentr<strong>at</strong>ion prepares<br />

students with a background in fitness or sport and<br />

business. Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in this field are involved with<br />

managing, promoting and marketing health clubs,<br />

fitness centers or sports teams. Required for a major in<br />

Kinesiology with a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in Fitness and Sports<br />

Industry: 1 hour KINS Activity Class, KINS 2002, KINS<br />

3008, KINS 3018, KINS 3019, KINS 3035 or 3055, KINS<br />

4019, KINS 4035, and 18 hours <strong>of</strong> electives to be chosen<br />

from the following: MGMT 3001, MGMT 3005, BUSN<br />

1001, BUSN 3005, ACCT 1001, ACCT 2012, ACCT 2013,<br />

MRKT 3001, MRKT 3007, MRKT 4007, MCOM 2001,<br />

MCOM 2002, ECON 1003, ECON 2001, ENGL 3021 or<br />

CMST 2001. — Total <strong>of</strong> 42 semester hours.
