1003. SYSTEMATIC GEOGRAPHY. 3 cr. The goal <strong>of</strong> this course is<br />
an integr<strong>at</strong>ed approach to geography. The course is standardsbased<br />
and is structured around the essential elements and<br />
geography standards. In terms <strong>of</strong> content, the approach is<br />
them<strong>at</strong>ic with examples drawn from both the developed and<br />
developing worlds. The method <strong>of</strong> instruction will consist <strong>of</strong> a<br />
combin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> direct instruction and problem-solving computerand<br />
classroom-based exercises and activities. For Elementary<br />
Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Majors only.<br />
1011. HUMAN ORIGINS AND EVOLUTION. 3 cr. The study <strong>of</strong> the<br />
origin <strong>of</strong> and biogenetic heritage <strong>of</strong> humans; a survey <strong>of</strong> modern<br />
human racial vari<strong>at</strong>ion; an introduction to archeological and<br />
prehistoric techniques <strong>of</strong> investig<strong>at</strong>ion regarding the changing<br />
physical form <strong>of</strong> humans. (Same as ANTG 1011.)<br />
2001. INTRODUCTION TO ARCHEOLOGY. 3 cr. Survey <strong>of</strong> the history<br />
and development <strong>of</strong> archeology as a science, its place in the<br />
sciences, and an overview <strong>of</strong> the important m<strong>at</strong>erial remains<br />
<strong>of</strong> past human life and activities in selected areas <strong>of</strong> the world.<br />

2003. LOUISIANA. 3 cr. A survey <strong>of</strong> the n<strong>at</strong>ural landscape; land forms,<br />
clim<strong>at</strong>e, soils, drainage, and the geographic factors; agriculture,<br />
transport<strong>at</strong>ion, and popul<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
2013. PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY. 3 cr. The n<strong>at</strong>ural landscape, with<br />
special emphasis on the distribution <strong>of</strong> land-forms, clim<strong>at</strong>e, soil,<br />
and veget<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
2014. PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY LABORATORY. 1 cr. Two hours<br />
labor<strong>at</strong>ory to accompany Geography 2013.<br />
2015. CARTOGRAPHY. 3 cr. Development <strong>of</strong> cartography, techniques,<br />
n<strong>at</strong>ure, and usage <strong>of</strong> map projections; interpret<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> maps;<br />
map construction.<br />
3001. CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY. 3 cr. An advanced course focusing<br />
on the study <strong>of</strong> culture and the expression <strong>of</strong> m<strong>at</strong>erial culture in<br />
the landscape. Prerequisite: GEOG 1001, or 1002, or 2003 or<br />
permission <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />
3008. OLD WORLD ARCHEOLOGY. 3 cr. A survey <strong>of</strong> the major<br />
archeological sequences <strong>of</strong> prehistoric Eurasia, Africa, and<br />
Oceania. (Same as ANTG 3008.)<br />
3020. CONSERVATION GEOGRAPHY. 3 cr. Problems and techniques<br />
<strong>of</strong> conserv<strong>at</strong>ion in agriculture, forestry, industry, mining, w<strong>at</strong>er,<br />
air, and the urban environment. Investig<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> conserv<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
ideology and political action. Emphasis on North America with<br />
some study <strong>of</strong> intern<strong>at</strong>ional phenomena. Prerequisite: GEOG<br />
1001 or GEOL 1001.<br />
4001. NORTH AMERICA. 3 cr. A regional study, with <strong>at</strong>tention to<br />
the influence <strong>of</strong> clim<strong>at</strong>e, topography, and n<strong>at</strong>ural resources on<br />
industry and trade.<br />
4003. LATIN AMERICA. 3 cr. A regional study <strong>of</strong> the configur<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />
clim<strong>at</strong>es, n<strong>at</strong>ural resources, cultural p<strong>at</strong>terns, and peoples.<br />
4005. AFRICA. 3 cr. The geographical fe<strong>at</strong>ures, with particular<br />
reference to economic, social and political developments; a study<br />
<strong>of</strong> the heritage and background, physical and cultural, <strong>of</strong> the<br />
present-day Afro-American culture.<br />
4007. EUROPE. 3 cr. General distribution <strong>of</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ural and cultural<br />
fe<strong>at</strong>ures with detailed study <strong>of</strong> selected areas.<br />
4009. ASIA. 3 cr. A survey <strong>of</strong> the physical environment <strong>of</strong> the continent<br />
as a whole, followed by a detailed study <strong>of</strong> China, India, and<br />
Japan.<br />
4012. FORMER SOVIET UNION. 3 cr. Physical and cultural<br />
environments, with special emphasis on clim<strong>at</strong>es, resources,<br />
industrializ<strong>at</strong>ions, and popul<strong>at</strong>ion distribution.<br />
4015. POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY. 3 cr. Problems in production, trade,<br />
government, and world development growing out <strong>of</strong> geographic<br />
conditions. Prerequisite: GEOG 1001-1002.<br />
4018. URBAN. 3 cr. A geographic approach to the study <strong>of</strong> urban<br />
areas stressing loc<strong>at</strong>ion, historical development, distribution,<br />
size, growth and function; emphasis on current urban problems.<br />

4020. LATIN AMERICAN FIELD COURSE. 3 cr. Supervised<br />
geographic research and observ<strong>at</strong>ion in a L<strong>at</strong>in American<br />
setting. Local examples illustr<strong>at</strong>e broad themes in the historical<br />
shaping <strong>of</strong> the L<strong>at</strong>in American landscape. The course includes<br />
introductory meetings <strong>at</strong> ULM followed by field observ<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />
discussion in a L<strong>at</strong>in American loc<strong>at</strong>ion. Prerequisite: GEOG<br />
4003 or permission <strong>of</strong> the department head.<br />
4021. THE ARCHEOLOGY OF MEXICO. 3 cr. An in-depth view <strong>of</strong><br />
the development <strong>of</strong> pre-Hispanic Mexican and Meso-American<br />
cultures and civiliz<strong>at</strong>ions from Paleo-Indian times to the Spanish<br />
Conquest; an overview <strong>of</strong> the major archeological sites pertinent<br />
to these cultures. (Same as ANTG 4021.)<br />

4010. THE ARCHEOLOGY OF LOUISIANA INDIANS. 3 cr. An<br />
introduction to the archeology <strong>of</strong> <strong>Louisiana</strong>’s Indian tribes from<br />
Paleo-Indian times (10,000 B.C.) through the historic period.<br />
Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing or permission <strong>of</strong> the<br />
instructor. (Same as ANTG 4010.)<br />
4011. THE ARCHEOLOGY OF NORTH AMERICA. 3 cr. The<br />
archeological background <strong>of</strong> North America from Mexico to the<br />
Arctic Circle; progressive st<strong>at</strong>es <strong>of</strong> development <strong>of</strong> prehistoric<br />
North American cultures. (Same as ANTG 4011.)<br />
4014. THE INDIANS OF NORTH AMERICA. 3 cr. Survey <strong>of</strong> the<br />
distribution and principal regional lifeways <strong>of</strong> North American<br />
Indian groups prior to disruption, dispersal, and the<br />
implement<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the reserv<strong>at</strong>ion system. (Same as ANTG<br />

4023. ARCHEOLOGICAL FIELD TECHNIQUES. 6 cr. A field course<br />
introducing the basic techniques <strong>of</strong> archeological mapping,<br />
excav<strong>at</strong>ion, c<strong>at</strong>aloging, specimen prepar<strong>at</strong>ion and preserv<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
A study <strong>of</strong> soils, physical str<strong>at</strong>igraphy, synecology, and techniques<br />
<strong>of</strong> artifact labor<strong>at</strong>ory analysis. May be repe<strong>at</strong>ed once for a<br />
maximum <strong>of</strong> 12 hours credit. (Same as ANTG 4023.)<br />

<strong>of</strong> the earth and the agents responsible for them, including the<br />
work <strong>of</strong> rivers, winds, glaciers, volcanoes, earthquakes, and<br />
oceans. Credit may not be earned in both GEOL 1001 and GEOL<br />
2006.<br />
1002. HISTORICAL GEOLOGY. 3 cr. The development, changes, and<br />
destruction <strong>of</strong> the land fe<strong>at</strong>ures and sea areas <strong>of</strong> the earth and<br />
the changing panorama <strong>of</strong> plant and animal life from the earth’s<br />
origin to the present day.<br />
