service veterans who took DSST as part <strong>of</strong> the DANTES<br />
program must have DSST subject scores reported<br />
directly to the <strong>University</strong> from DANTES. The <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Louisiana</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Monroe</strong> DSST credit granting policy, a<br />
list <strong>of</strong> approved DSST exams, and registr<strong>at</strong>ion forms<br />
are available <strong>at</strong> testing.ulm.edu. Inform<strong>at</strong>ion concerning<br />
DSST, including study m<strong>at</strong>erials, is available <strong>at</strong> www.<br />
getcollegecredit.com.<br />
6. ULM Credit Examin<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
These credit examin<strong>at</strong>ions will be given <strong>at</strong> ULM only<br />
under exceptional circumstances. Credit ex am i na tions<br />
are <strong>of</strong>fered only for those courses which are required as<br />
part <strong>of</strong> a student’s educ<strong>at</strong>ion program (i.e., core subject<br />
requirement or elective). Each credit examin<strong>at</strong>ion must be<br />
approved in advance by the dean <strong>of</strong> the college in which<br />
the student is registered, the dean <strong>of</strong> the college in which<br />
the course concerned is given, and the instructor involved.<br />
The following regul<strong>at</strong>ions will govern the giving <strong>of</strong><br />
credit examin<strong>at</strong>ions:<br />
a. Permission for credit examin<strong>at</strong>ions will be given<br />
only in those instances in which the student has<br />
already gained a fundamental knowledge <strong>of</strong> the<br />
subject.<br />
b. Permission to take a credit examin<strong>at</strong>ion will be<br />
granted only to persons who are students, or<br />
former students, <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Louisiana</strong><br />
<strong>at</strong> <strong>Monroe</strong> in s<strong>at</strong>isfactory academic standing. No<br />
instructor may give a credit examin<strong>at</strong>ion until the<br />
necessary approvals have been obtained by the<br />
student on forms supplied by the Registrar.<br />
c. In no case will a student be permitted to take a<br />
credit examin<strong>at</strong>ion in a course if th<strong>at</strong> student has:<br />
(1) audited or taken the course for non-credit,<br />
(2) made an uns<strong>at</strong>isfactory grade previously in<br />
the course,<br />
(3) received credit for a higher course in a series<br />
<strong>of</strong> sequential courses.<br />
d. Credit examin<strong>at</strong>ions must be taken within the<br />
first month <strong>of</strong> the semester or within the first two<br />
weeks <strong>of</strong> either summer term.<br />
e. Credit examin<strong>at</strong>ions are indic<strong>at</strong>ed as such on<br />
the student’s record. Earned credit is recorded.<br />
Credits earned through credit examin<strong>at</strong>ions are<br />
not used in comput<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the student’s quality<br />
point r<strong>at</strong>io, but may be counted as resident credit<br />
for gradu<strong>at</strong>ion purposes.<br />
7. Credit for Military Service<br />
Honorably discharged members <strong>of</strong> the U.S. Armed<br />
Forces who are enrolled <strong>at</strong> ULM may be eligible for credit<br />
for physical educ<strong>at</strong>ion upon submission <strong>of</strong> military transcripts<br />
to the Office <strong>of</strong> Recruitment and Admissions.<br />
Additional credit may be granted for course work completed<br />
in service schools where equivalence in terms <strong>of</strong><br />
college courses has been recommended for college credit<br />
in the Guide to the Evalu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Experience in<br />
the Armed Services, published by the American Council<br />
on Educ<strong>at</strong>ion (ACE). Official military transcripts (AARTS,<br />
SMART, CCAF, or CGI) must be submitted to the Office<br />
<strong>of</strong> Recruitment and Admissions for an evalu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> these<br />
experiences. Students should check with their curriculum<br />
advisor, department head, or dean for determin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />
whether the credit will be acceptable as a substitute for<br />
coursework in their curriculum.<br />
8. English Department Diagnostic/Placement<br />
Essay and Challenge Exam<br />
English 0090 Students who demonstr<strong>at</strong>e outstanding<br />
performance on the English departmental diagnostic<br />
essay, as determined by a panel <strong>of</strong> evalu<strong>at</strong>ors, may be<br />
exempted from English 0090 (Grammar and Composition)<br />
and allowed to enroll in English 1001. English 1001<br />
students who demonstr<strong>at</strong>e unreadiness for English<br />
1001 on the English department diagnostic essay, as<br />
determined by a panel <strong>of</strong> evalu<strong>at</strong>ors, may be required to<br />
take or repe<strong>at</strong> English 0090.<br />
Upon s<strong>at</strong>isfactory completion <strong>of</strong> coursework in English<br />
0090, a student may petition for credit for English 1001<br />
based upon a challenge exam constructed and evalu<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
by a panel <strong>of</strong> English faculty. This credit is subject to the<br />
approval <strong>of</strong> the department head <strong>of</strong> the student, the dean<br />
<strong>of</strong> the college <strong>of</strong> the student, the English department<br />
head, and the dean <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences.<br />
CREDIT HOUR SYSTEM AND COURSE<br />
NUMBERING<br />
A credit or semester hour represents a minimum <strong>of</strong><br />
one hour <strong>of</strong> class work or two or more hours <strong>of</strong> labor<strong>at</strong>ory<br />
work a week, together with the necessary prepar<strong>at</strong>ion for<br />
one semester <strong>of</strong> approxim<strong>at</strong>ely fifteen weeks. The value <strong>of</strong><br />
each course <strong>of</strong> instruction is st<strong>at</strong>ed in terms <strong>of</strong> semester<br />
hours.<br />
Courses are normally numbered according to the<br />
following system: 0000-0099, developmental courses;<br />
1000 to 1099, freshman; 2000 to 2099, sophomore; 3000<br />
to 3099, junior; 4000 to 4099, senior; 5000 to 5099,<br />
gradu<strong>at</strong>e; 6000 to 7099, courses beyond the Master’s<br />
level. Certain courses in the 4000 level are accepted for<br />
gradu<strong>at</strong>e credit, where so indic<strong>at</strong>ed. Gradu<strong>at</strong>e st<strong>at</strong>us<br />
is required for gradu<strong>at</strong>e credit. This course numbering<br />
system does not apply to Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Pharmacy<br />
(Pharm.D.) courses. See College <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy section.<br />
COURSE LOAD<br />
ULM schedules courses in three terms during the<br />
academic year: fall (16 weeks), spring (16 weeks), and<br />
summer (ten weeks). Each term may include course<br />
<strong>of</strong>ferings within shorter parts <strong>of</strong> terms, including first<br />
eight-week sessions, second eight-week sessions,<br />
intersessions (three weeks), Summer I sessions (four<br />
weeks), and Summer II sessions (four weeks). Students<br />
are not normally allowed to take more than 18 semester
