All candid<strong>at</strong>es for degrees with a major in music,<br />
regardless <strong>of</strong> the curriculum followed, will be required<br />
to pass pr<strong>of</strong>iciency examin<strong>at</strong>ions in piano and must<br />
enroll in piano until the pr<strong>of</strong>iciency level appropri<strong>at</strong>e to<br />
the major program is passed. Students whose major<br />
performance medium is other than keyboard must pass<br />
Piano Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency VI. Except for those students pursuing<br />
a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in Piano Pedagogy and those students<br />
pursuing a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in Instrumental Performance<br />
whose major performance area is in a keyboard<br />
instrument, the piano sequence MUSC 1015, 1016,<br />
2015, 2016 must be completed before enrolling in priv<strong>at</strong>e<br />
instruction. Permission for exceptions to this may be<br />
granted by the Head <strong>of</strong> the Division <strong>of</strong> Music.<br />
All music majors must particip<strong>at</strong>e in <strong>at</strong> least one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
major music organiz<strong>at</strong>ions, band, orchestra, or chorus,<br />
on a full time basis, for non-credit, during every fall and<br />
spring semester enrolled. Particip<strong>at</strong>ion in a particular<br />
organiz<strong>at</strong>ion must be directly appropri<strong>at</strong>e to the student’s<br />
major performing medium. Membership in the various<br />
organiz<strong>at</strong>ions shall be determined by the director<br />
concerned. Music majors must obtain a grade <strong>of</strong> no less<br />
than "C" in the course. Music majors with a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
in music educ<strong>at</strong>ion are not required to perform in a major<br />
ensemble during the semester in which they student<br />
teach. Qualified non-music majors may particip<strong>at</strong>e in<br />
these organiz<strong>at</strong>ions for credit or non-credit and must be<br />
approved by the respective director. Qualified students<br />
may enroll in more than one ensemble per semester.<br />
Students with a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in instrumental performance<br />
must enroll in four semesters <strong>of</strong> MUSC 4034 (Chamber<br />
Music) for one credit in addition to the major ensemble<br />
requirements detailed above.<br />
All music majors must enroll in Recital Class (MUSC<br />
1000/20000/3000/4000) each semester <strong>of</strong> <strong>at</strong>tendance and<br />
obtain a grade <strong>of</strong> no less than "CR" in the course. Music<br />
majors with a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in music educ<strong>at</strong>ion are not<br />
required to enroll in Recital Class during the semester in<br />
which they student teach.<br />

1001. FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSIC THEORY. 3 cr. A non-technical<br />
course designed to provide the layman with an understanding<br />
and utiliz<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the basic elements <strong>of</strong> music including sound,<br />
melody, harmony, rhythm, and form.<br />
1002. MUSIC THEORY I. 3 cr. Course covers basic fundamentals <strong>of</strong><br />
music theory including intervals, chordal structures and simple<br />
harmonic function. Prerequisite: MUSC 1001 or equivalent.<br />
1003. AURAL SKILLS I. 1 cr. Course covers fundamental elements<br />
<strong>of</strong> melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dict<strong>at</strong>ion and sight-singing.<br />
Prerequisite: MUSC 1001 or equivalent.<br />
1004. MUSIC THEORY II. 3 cr. Course covers the use and function<br />
<strong>of</strong> cadences, phrases, non-chord tones and seventh chords.<br />
Prerequisite: MUSC 1002 or equivalent.<br />
1005. AURAL SKILLS II. 1 cr. Course covers intermedi<strong>at</strong>e melodic dict<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />
rhythmic dict<strong>at</strong>ion and sight-singing. Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> harmonic<br />
dict<strong>at</strong>ion are introduced. Prerequisite: MUSC 1003 or equivalent.<br />
1015-1016. PIANO CLASS. 1 cr. per semester.<br />
1017. BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE RECORDER CLASS. 1 cr.<br />
1020. GUITAR CLASS. 1 cr. per semester.<br />
1091. ENJOYMENT OF MUSIC. 3 cr. A non-technical course designed<br />
to provide the layman with the understanding necessary for the<br />
enjoyment <strong>of</strong> music <strong>of</strong> various types, including music <strong>of</strong> different<br />
races and ethnic groups.<br />
1092. ENJOYMENT OF JAZZ. 3 cr. Logical musical deriv<strong>at</strong>ions and<br />
developments <strong>of</strong> American Jazz, both <strong>of</strong> itself as an art form<br />
and its influence on other areas <strong>of</strong> music. Ethnic influences such<br />
as Afro-American Jazz, New Orleans ragtime, and Memphis<br />
influences will be explored.<br />
1093. LITERATURE AND APPRECIATION. 2 cr. For music majors;<br />
open to others by approval <strong>of</strong> the head <strong>of</strong> the Division <strong>of</strong> Music.<br />
1094. INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRONIC MUSIC. 2 cr. Overview <strong>of</strong><br />
the history and techniques <strong>of</strong> electro-acoustic music with handson<br />
labor<strong>at</strong>ory work in the electro-acoustic lab.<br />
2000. RECITAL HOUR. 0 cr. per semester. Required divisionapproved<br />
student, faculty, and guest artist performance and<br />
master classes. Graded credit/no credit.<br />
2001. BASKETBALL PEP BAND. 0 cr. Entertainment ensemble for<br />
home basketball games. Group travels to conference tournament<br />
and postseason games. Prerequisites: approval <strong>of</strong> the director.<br />

2002. MUSIC THEORY III. 3 cr. Course covers theoretical aspects <strong>of</strong><br />
secondary chords, modul<strong>at</strong>ions and chrom<strong>at</strong>ically altered chords<br />
in common practice tonal music. Prerequisite: MUSC 1004 or<br />
equivalent.<br />
2003. AURAL SKILLS III. 1 cr. Course covers intermedi<strong>at</strong>e to<br />
advanced melodic and rhythmic dict<strong>at</strong>ion and sight-singing and<br />
intermedi<strong>at</strong>e harmonic dict<strong>at</strong>ion. Prerequisite: MUSC 1005 or<br />
equivalent.<br />
2004. MUSIC THEORY IV. 3 cr. Course covers theoretical aspects <strong>of</strong><br />
l<strong>at</strong>e 19th and early 20th century tonal music. Overview <strong>of</strong> 20th<br />
century post-tonal techniques provided. Prerequisite: MUSC 2002<br />
or equivalent.<br />
2005. AURAL SKILLS IV. 1 cr. Course covers advanced melodic,<br />
rhythmic and harmonic dict<strong>at</strong>ion and sight-singing. Prerequisite:<br />
MUSC 2003 or equivalent.<br />
2006. UNIVERSITY CHORALE. 0-1 cr. per semester. Prerequisite:<br />
Approval <strong>of</strong> the director. Meets ensemble requirements for<br />
majors in vocal performance, music the<strong>at</strong>re, and vocal music<br />
