2030. PLANT AND ANIMAL FORM AND FUNCTION. 4 cr. A detailed<br />

and system<strong>at</strong>ic study <strong>of</strong> plant structure, growth, nutrition,<br />

transport, development, reproduction, animal nutrition, circul<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

gas exchange, homeost<strong>at</strong>ic mechanisms, chemical signaling,<br />

reproduction and development. Three hours lecture and two<br />

hours lab per week. Prerequisite: "C" or better in 1022, 1023.<br />

2040. HUMAN ANATOMY. 3 cr. Gross structure and physiology <strong>of</strong><br />

the body with emphasis on the skeletal, muscular, nervous, and<br />

circul<strong>at</strong>ory systems. Prerequisites: GPA <strong>of</strong> 2.5 or higher; "C" or<br />

better in 1020, 1021, 2026; credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 2041. F<br />

2041. HUMAN ANATOMY LABORATORY. 1 cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory course<br />

to accompany 2040. Three hours <strong>of</strong> labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisites:<br />

Cumul<strong>at</strong>ive GPA <strong>of</strong> 2.5 or higher; “C” or better in 1020, 1021 or<br />

2050. ECONOMIC PLANTS. 3 cr. The history and applied<br />

uses <strong>of</strong> plants as food, fibers, lumber, drugs, and rel<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

commodities. Prerequisites: "C" or better in BIOL 1001 or<br />

1020 or instructor approval.<br />

3002. PRINCIPLES OF ECOLOGY. 4 cr. The basic principles <strong>of</strong><br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ionships between organisms and the environment. Three<br />

hours lecture and three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory per week. Prerequisites:<br />

"C" or better in BIOL 1022, 1023. (Formerly BIOL 3003, 3004)<br />

3005. GENETICS. 3 cr. Fundamental concepts <strong>of</strong> heredity <strong>at</strong> the<br />

molecular, cellular, organismic, and popul<strong>at</strong>ion levels. N<strong>at</strong>ure<br />

<strong>of</strong> the genetic m<strong>at</strong>erial and its involvement in the determin<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

<strong>of</strong> structure and function. Consider<strong>at</strong>ion given to both classical<br />

and modern genetics. Prerequisites: “C” or better in 1020, 1021;<br />

junior standing.<br />

3006. GENETICS LABORATORY. 1 cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory to accompany<br />

3005. Lab topics include Mendelian genetics to molecular<br />

genetics. Three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisites: "C" or better or<br />

registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 3005.<br />

3008. INTRODUCTION TO EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY. 3 cr. A survey<br />

<strong>of</strong> fundamental concepts <strong>of</strong> modern evolutionary theory, including<br />

n<strong>at</strong>ural selection, speci<strong>at</strong>ion, and adapt<strong>at</strong>ion, followed by an<br />

investig<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> recent issues and controversies in evolutionary<br />

biology. Reading and discussion <strong>of</strong> primary sources will be<br />

emphasized. Prerequisite: "C" or better in 3005.<br />

3010. HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY. 3 cr. Basic physiological processes with<br />

emphasis on the nervous system, skeletal system, autonomic<br />

nervous system, endocrine system, circul<strong>at</strong>ory system,<br />

respir<strong>at</strong>ory system, gastrointestinal system, urinary system,<br />

immune and lymph<strong>at</strong>ic systems and reproductive system.<br />

Prerequisites: "C" or better in 2020; CHEM 1007, 1009. Sp<br />

3013. HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY LABORATORY. 1 cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory<br />

course to accompany 3010. Three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisite:<br />

3016. COMPARATIVE ANATOMY. 4 cr. Study <strong>of</strong> the structure and<br />

evolutionary development <strong>of</strong> organs and organ systems in<br />

vertebr<strong>at</strong>es. Labor<strong>at</strong>ory requires student to purchase dissection<br />

specimens. Prerequisite: "C" or better in 2010 or 2030.<br />

3020. CONSERVATION BIOLOGY. 3 cr. A course dealing with<br />

biodiversity and its conserv<strong>at</strong>ion. Topics include biodiversity,<br />

habit<strong>at</strong> loss, the effects <strong>of</strong> habit<strong>at</strong> changes on popul<strong>at</strong>ions and the<br />

design and establishment <strong>of</strong> reserves. Prerequisites: “C” or better<br />

in 1022, 1023.<br />

3030. INVERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY. 4 cr. The morphology and<br />

phylogeny <strong>of</strong> represent<strong>at</strong>ive invertebr<strong>at</strong>es. Three hours lecture<br />

and three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisite: "C" or better in 2010<br />

or 2030.<br />

3032. VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY. 4 cr. The morphology, taxonomy, and<br />

life history <strong>of</strong> represent<strong>at</strong>ive vertebr<strong>at</strong>es. Three hours lecture and<br />

three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory with field trips. Prerequisite: "C" or better in<br />

2010 or 2030.<br />

4093. SPECIAL TOPICS. 3-4 cr. A course on topics <strong>of</strong> current<br />

biological interests. Labor<strong>at</strong>ory section included <strong>at</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong><br />

4111. GENETICS AND SOCIETY. 3 cr. A Biology capstone course. A<br />

survey <strong>of</strong> current topics in genetic research and recent advances<br />

in biotechnology, including implic<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> these discoveries.<br />

Prerequisites: "C" or better in 1020 and 3005 or permission <strong>of</strong><br />

4112. MICROBES AND MAN. 3 cr. Biology capstone course. A survey<br />

<strong>of</strong> microbial research and biotechnology including social, legal,<br />

and ethical implic<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> past, present, and future discoveries.<br />

4113. ECOSYSTEMS AND COMMUNITIES. 3 cr. A Biology capstone<br />

course. The interactions and impacts <strong>of</strong> global human societies<br />

on various ecosystems, sustainable development, and ecosystem<br />

services. Prerequisite: "C" or better in 2001 or 3003, or<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor. (Formerly BIOL 411C)<br />

4114. SCIENCE, BIOLOGY, AND EVOLUTION. 3 cr. A biology<br />

capstone course. A broad, topical examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> evolutionary<br />

theory and principles and its connection to all disciplines <strong>of</strong> the<br />

biological sciences. Prerequisites: "C" or better in 1020, 1022,<br />

and 3005 or instructor approval.<br />

4004. ECOLOGICAL METHODS. 3 cr. Contemporary methods<br />

employed in plant and animal ecology. Prerequisite: "C" or better<br />

<strong>of</strong> the living organism including an introduction to molecular<br />

biology with emphasis on the cell. Prerequisites: Credit or<br />

registr<strong>at</strong>ion in CHEM 2032; credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4009.<br />

4009. CELLULAR PHYSIOLOGY LAB. 1 cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory course to<br />

accompany 4008. Three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisite: credit or<br />

registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4008.<br />

4012. PLANT PHYSIOLOGY. 4 cr. An introduction to the chemical and<br />

physical processes occurring in plants. Three hours lecture and<br />

three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisites: “C” or better in 1022, 1023.<br />

4014. ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY. 4 cr. An introduction to the processes<br />

by which animals function in their environment. Three hours<br />

lecture and three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisites: “C” or better in<br />

1022, 1023.<br />

4017. DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY. 3 cr. An introduction to the<br />

mechanisms and evolution <strong>of</strong> developmental processes <strong>of</strong> plants<br />

and animals. Topics include p<strong>at</strong>tern form<strong>at</strong>ion, cell differenti<strong>at</strong>ion, and<br />

organogenesis. An emphasis is placed on experimental aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

developmental biology. Prerequisite: "C" or better in 3005.<br />

4018. DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY LABORATORY. 1 cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory<br />

course to accompany BIOL 4017. Lab topics include experimental<br />

investig<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> fertiliz<strong>at</strong>ion, embryogenesis, gene expression,<br />

and p<strong>at</strong>terns <strong>of</strong> vertebr<strong>at</strong>e organogenesis. Prerequisite: Credit<br />

with "C" or better or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4017.<br />

4019. ADVANCED CONCEPTS IN GENETICS AND MOLECULAR<br />

BIOLOGY. 3 cr. An advanced level course in genetics with a<br />

focus on DNA structure and function, gene expression, protein<br />

function, human genetics, and biotechnology. An emphasis is<br />

placed on current topics and emerging biomedical technologies.<br />

Prerequisite: "C" or better in 3005.<br />

4022. HISTOLOGY. 4 cr. Microscopic structure <strong>of</strong> the cell; cellular<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ions; tissues; the rel<strong>at</strong>ionship <strong>of</strong> structure to function.<br />

Three hours lecture and three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisite: "C"<br />

or better in 2020.<br />

4025. NEUROLOGY. 3 cr. Study <strong>of</strong> the an<strong>at</strong>omy, physiology and<br />

p<strong>at</strong>hology <strong>of</strong> the human nervous system.<br />

4026. NEUROLOGY LABORATORY. 1 cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>ory course to<br />

accompany 4025. Three hours labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Prerequisite: Credit or<br />

registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4025.<br />

4030. DNA ANALYSIS IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY. 4 cr. A labor<strong>at</strong>orybased<br />

course focused on gener<strong>at</strong>ing and analyzing DNA d<strong>at</strong>a.<br />

Methods include introductions, protocols and trouble shooting<br />

for PCR, RAPDs, DNA sequencing, alignment and phylogentic<br />

analyses. Prerequisite: "C" or better in 3005.
