MISSION STATEMENT<br />
The mission <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Health Sciences is to<br />
educ<strong>at</strong>e practitioners to meet the diverse health care<br />
needs <strong>of</strong> the citizens <strong>of</strong> <strong>Louisiana</strong> and beyond. The<br />
College, as an academic unit <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>, embraces<br />
the educ<strong>at</strong>ional philosophy <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> and fulfills the<br />
purpose <strong>of</strong> specialized pr<strong>of</strong>essional educ<strong>at</strong>ion by <strong>of</strong>fering<br />
organized programs <strong>of</strong> study in medical labor<strong>at</strong>ory<br />
science, dental hygiene, health studies, nursing,<br />
occup<strong>at</strong>ional therapy assistant, radiologic technology and<br />
speech- language p<strong>at</strong>hology with opportunities to work in<br />
interdisciplinary teams. In addition, the College provides<br />
continuing educ<strong>at</strong>ion to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> health care<br />
providers in northeast <strong>Louisiana</strong>, provides pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
service to the community, and promotes the development<br />
<strong>of</strong> each pr<strong>of</strong>ession through scholarly activity.<br />
GENERAL INFORMATION<br />
The College <strong>of</strong> Health Sciences includes one health<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>ession school and six independent allied health departments<br />
<strong>of</strong>fering a total <strong>of</strong> seven undergradu<strong>at</strong>e programs.<br />
ADMISSIONS<br />
Admission criteria for the pr<strong>of</strong>essional programs<br />
in the College <strong>of</strong> Health Sciences are included in the<br />
following sections describing each program. Note th<strong>at</strong><br />
prior criminal conviction may have a bearing on admission<br />
decisions for students applying to the various pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
programs within the College <strong>of</strong> Health Sciences.<br />
CORE CURRICULUM<br />
All majors in baccalaure<strong>at</strong>e curricula having<br />
pre- pr<strong>of</strong>essional and pr<strong>of</strong>essional segments within<br />
the College <strong>of</strong> Health Sciences complete a 42-hour<br />
general educ<strong>at</strong>ion core curriculum consisting <strong>of</strong> English,<br />
6 hours; M<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics, 6 hours; N<strong>at</strong>ural Sciences, 9<br />
hours; Fine Arts, 3 hours; Humanities, 9 hours; and Social<br />
Sciences, 6 hours; <strong>University</strong> Seminar (1); and <strong>University</strong><br />
Capstone, 3 hours.<br />
DEPARTMENT OF DENTAL HYGIENE<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science<br />
The Dental Hygiene curriculum is composed <strong>of</strong> two<br />
segments, pre-dental hygiene and pr<strong>of</strong>essional dental<br />
hygiene. Pre-dental hygiene is the segment comprising<br />
four academic semesters, or the equivalent, in an<br />
accredited college or university. It is concerned with<br />
instruction in general educ<strong>at</strong>ion and the basic physical<br />
and biological sciences to prepare the student for<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional dental hygiene. The pr<strong>of</strong>essional program in<br />
dental hygiene consists <strong>of</strong> four academic semesters, one<br />
summer session, or the equivalent, after admission to the<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional program in dental hygiene. It is concerned<br />
with instruction in pr<strong>of</strong>essional dental hygiene courses to<br />
prepare the student for the pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice <strong>of</strong> dental<br />
hygiene.<br />
Off campus clinical activities are required <strong>of</strong> each<br />
student. Students are financially responsible for these<br />
activities.<br />
MISSION STATEMENT<br />
The Department <strong>of</strong> Dental Hygiene, an educ<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
section <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Health Sciences, derives its<br />
purposes and functions from the mission st<strong>at</strong>ement <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Louisiana</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Monroe</strong>. Our primary purpose is<br />
to provide quality educ<strong>at</strong>ion to all dental hygiene students,<br />
without discrimin<strong>at</strong>ion, while recognizing and respecting<br />
the dignity <strong>of</strong> each individual. To fulfill this purpose, we<br />
are committed to providing this educ<strong>at</strong>ion by promoting<br />
scholarly activity in dental hygiene theory and practice.<br />
We are committed to contributing to the oral health needs<br />
<strong>of</strong> the community by providing high quality care in a cost<br />
efficient manner. We promote the educ<strong>at</strong>ional growth and<br />
development <strong>of</strong> each individual through lifelong learning.<br />
ADMISSION TO PRE-DENTAL HYGIENE<br />
Applicants for admission to the Pre-Dental Hygiene<br />
curriculum must meet the general admission requirements<br />
for admission to the <strong>University</strong>. Applic<strong>at</strong>ions are to be<br />
submitted to the <strong>University</strong> Admissions Office.<br />
ADMISSION TO THE DENTAL HYGIENE<br />
CURRICULUM (TRADITIONAL STUDENTS)<br />
The Dental Hygiene curriculum <strong>of</strong>fers clinical<br />
instruction in its educ<strong>at</strong>ional program as required by the<br />
Commission on Dental Accredit<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the American<br />
Dental Associ<strong>at</strong>ion. Admissions are determined annually<br />
based upon the availability <strong>of</strong> clinical facilities. Questions<br />
regarding out-<strong>of</strong>-st<strong>at</strong>e residents should be directed to the<br />
Dental Hygiene Office.<br />
Applicants for admission to the pr<strong>of</strong>essional program<br />
in the Dental Hygiene curriculum, in addition to meeting<br />
the requirements for admission to the <strong>University</strong>, must<br />
meet the following requirements: 1) An earned 2.5<br />
uncorrected grade point average, or above, in all previous<br />
course work <strong>at</strong> all higher institutions <strong>of</strong> <strong>at</strong>tendance, 2) A<br />
minimum <strong>of</strong> 35 hours Pre-Dental Hygiene pre-requisites<br />
prior to applic<strong>at</strong>ion on March 1, 3) A minimum <strong>of</strong> 20 hours<br />
Pre-Dental Hygiene prerequisite science hours (includes<br />
M<strong>at</strong>h and Nutrition) prior to applic<strong>at</strong>ion on March 1. 4)<br />
An <strong>of</strong>ficial copy <strong>of</strong> The American College Test (ACT) and<br />
5) submission <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial transcripts from all colleges and<br />
universities <strong>at</strong>tended. Grades earned in remedial and/or<br />
developmental courses will not be included in determining<br />
the grade point average. Additionally, intern<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
students must submit a s<strong>at</strong>isfactory score on The Test <strong>of</strong><br />
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examin<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
Due to the utiliz<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> objective criteria in processing<br />
applic<strong>at</strong>ions, <strong>at</strong>tainment <strong>of</strong> minimum requirements in the
