the 19th century, as well as the influence <strong>of</strong> other cultures on<br />

this repertoire. Composers and their works are situ<strong>at</strong>ed within<br />

a larger cultural and historical context. Emphasis is placed<br />

on aural identific<strong>at</strong>ion and written analysis <strong>of</strong> represent<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

works. A research paper and accompanying assignments<br />

form a significant portion <strong>of</strong> the course grade. Students will<br />

be introduced to electronic resources for music research.<br />

brass, and percussion; also provides opportunity to develop<br />

conducting skills. Prerequisite: one credit <strong>of</strong> minor applied<br />

instrument to be played in the ensemble.<br />

“refresher” course for instrumental music educ<strong>at</strong>ion teachers<br />

emphasing the basic concepts <strong>of</strong> the marching band. New<br />

concepts and teaching techniques in marching band will be<br />

discussed. Also, rel<strong>at</strong>ed areas such as administr<strong>at</strong>ion, arranging,<br />

new music, charting, auxiliary units, and marching percussion will<br />

be covered. Films and video tapes will be used extensively.<br />

4007. PIANO TEACHERS WORKSHOP. 3 cr. Maximum, 9 cr. A<br />

course for piano teachers, including instructional procedures,<br />

methods and m<strong>at</strong>erials, and teaching demonstr<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

course designed for choral directors including vocal techniques,<br />
