4004. MEDICAL SOCIOLOGY. 3 cr. An analysis <strong>of</strong> human adapt<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

to illness, the sick role, social organiz<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> medical institutions,<br />

and the sociology <strong>of</strong> de<strong>at</strong>h.<br />

4005. THEORIES OF CRIME AND DELINQUENCY. 3 cr. An analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> the extent <strong>of</strong> crime and delinquency; impact <strong>of</strong> crime and<br />

elinquency on society; physical, social, and psychological<br />

caus<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> crime and delinquency; and current issues in<br />

criminology. (Same as CJUS 4005.)<br />

4006. RELIGION AND SOCIETY. 3 cr. A study <strong>of</strong> structure and functions<br />

<strong>of</strong> religion and its effect on society, culture, and personality, a<br />

compar<strong>at</strong>ive analysis <strong>of</strong> religion; and an examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> religion in<br />

American based on sociological research.<br />

4007. POPULATION AND SOCIETY. 3 cr. Problems <strong>of</strong> the quantity<br />

and quality <strong>of</strong> the popul<strong>at</strong>ion, including composition, differential<br />

fertility, popul<strong>at</strong>ion pressure, internal migr<strong>at</strong>ion, regional and class<br />

differentials, and trends.<br />

4012. MINORITY GROUPS. 3 cr. An analysis <strong>of</strong> the structure, culture,<br />

and social processes <strong>of</strong> ethnic, racial, social and religious groups<br />

in America. (May be <strong>of</strong>fered in non-traditional modes.)<br />

4015. JUVENILE DELINQUENCY AND JUSTICE. 3 cr. The n<strong>at</strong>ure,<br />

extent, and causes <strong>of</strong> juvenile delinquency; factors in its<br />

tre<strong>at</strong>ment and prevention, including community and agency<br />

programs; and analysis <strong>of</strong> the legal system as it applies to<br />

juveniles. (Same as CJUS 4015.)<br />

4019. THE FAMILY. 3 cr. The past and present role <strong>of</strong> the family as the<br />

primary social group in our culture; problems facing the modern<br />

family in a changing social world. (Same as SOCL 3000D.)<br />

4022. ANTHROPOLOGY OF LATIN AMERICA. 3 cr. Description <strong>of</strong><br />

indigenous social organiz<strong>at</strong>ions prior to conquest. Survey <strong>of</strong><br />

community ethnographic studies <strong>of</strong> African, Amerind, Asi<strong>at</strong>ic<br />

and European cultures in contemporary rural and urban L<strong>at</strong>in<br />

America. Prerequisite: SOCL 3007 or approval <strong>of</strong> department<br />

head. (Same as ANTG 4022.)<br />

4024. WOMEN AND AGING. 3 cr. Examines the life experiences <strong>of</strong><br />

women as they age. Emphasis is on sociological influences on<br />

perceptions <strong>of</strong> aging among women and on aging women’s roles<br />

in society. (Same as GERO 4024.)<br />

4025. SEMINAR IN DEATH AND DYING. 3 cr. Explor<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

social organiz<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> dying, including a view on cross-cultural<br />

perspectives on de<strong>at</strong>h, tre<strong>at</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> the dying p<strong>at</strong>ient, and the<br />

grief process. (Same as GERO 4025)<br />

4030. BELIEF SYSTEMS. 3 cr. The rel<strong>at</strong>ionship between pre-liter<strong>at</strong>e<br />

belief systems and social structure; myths <strong>of</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion, life cycle<br />

crisis, rites <strong>of</strong> passage, purity and pollution, witchcraft and<br />

supern<strong>at</strong>ural illness. (Same as ANTG 4030)<br />

4035. ANTHROPOLOGY OF SEX ROLES. 3 cr. An analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

different values th<strong>at</strong> define appropri<strong>at</strong>e masculine and feminine<br />

behavior (sex roles) in a variety <strong>of</strong> cultures. Explores the impact<br />

<strong>of</strong> social institutions on teaching and enforcing sex roles in<br />

traditional and modern societies. (Same as ANTG 4035)<br />

4043. SOCIOLOGY OF SPORTS, RECREATION, AND LEISURE. 3<br />

cr. The structure and functions <strong>of</strong> sports and recre<strong>at</strong>ion in fulfilling<br />

leisure pursuits in American society.<br />

4052. QUALITATIVE RESEARCH. 3 cr. An examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> different<br />

types <strong>of</strong> qualit<strong>at</strong>ive research, techniques <strong>of</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a collection,<br />

analysis, and present<strong>at</strong>ion, and ethical issues; explor<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

strengths and limit<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> this type <strong>of</strong> interpret<strong>at</strong>ive work. (Same<br />

as GERO 4052)<br />

4055. SOCIOLOGY OF BALANCED LIVING. 3 cr. The study <strong>of</strong> factors<br />

influencing the socializ<strong>at</strong>ion process, dynamics <strong>of</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ionships,<br />

and life s<strong>at</strong>isfaction. Focus is on making choices and meeting<br />

challenges based on understanding <strong>of</strong> the interaction process<br />

and life skills training.<br />

4070. SOCIAL RESEARCH. 3 cr. The formul<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> a research<br />

problem; ethics <strong>of</strong> research; development <strong>of</strong> research design;<br />

sampling procedures; collecting and processing <strong>of</strong> research d<strong>at</strong>a.<br />

Prerequisite: SOCL 1001. (same as POLS 4070) Formerly SOCL<br />

4071. SOCIAL STATISTICS. 3 cr. The St<strong>at</strong>istical procedures<br />

appropri<strong>at</strong>e to the measurement and analysis <strong>of</strong> social d<strong>at</strong>a.<br />

4090. PERSPECTIVES ON SEXUALITY. 3 cr. Human sexuality is<br />

considered from biological, psychological and sociological<br />

perspectives. A broad overview <strong>of</strong> reproductive an<strong>at</strong>omy,<br />

contraception, gender roles, sexual practices, and social values<br />

acquaints students with significant aspects <strong>of</strong> sexuality.<br />

developing an elementary ability to speak, understand, read, and<br />

write the language.<br />

*1002. ELEMENTARY SPANISH II. 3 cr. A continu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the study <strong>of</strong><br />

Spanish on the elementary level. Prerequisite: A “C” or better in<br />

SPAN 1001 or permission <strong>of</strong> the department head.
