and small group involvement to develop awareness <strong>of</strong> various<br />
communic<strong>at</strong>ive skills utilized in the interpersonal rel<strong>at</strong>ionship and<br />
increase effectiveness in interpersonal communic<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
4080. EFFECTIVE PARENTING. 3 cr. Designed to help students<br />
and parents-to-be understand the principles and techniques <strong>of</strong><br />
establishing effective parent-child rel<strong>at</strong>ionships.<br />
CRIMINAL JUSTICE<br />
(CJUS)<br />
Required for a major in Criminal Justice: 1001; 2030;<br />
2050; 2070, 3003, or 3010; 2093; 3001; 4005; 4015;<br />
4018; 4029; and 12 additional hours in Criminal Justice—<br />
Total <strong>of</strong> 42 semester hours. A grade <strong>of</strong> “C” or higher is<br />
required in all courses required for a major. Criminal<br />
Justice 4099 is required as <strong>University</strong> Capstone.<br />
Students may choose to complete a minor as part <strong>of</strong><br />
their free electives.<br />

1001. INTRODUCTION TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE. 3 cr. An examin<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
<strong>of</strong> the history, organiz<strong>at</strong>ion, and function <strong>of</strong> the various local and<br />
federal agencies th<strong>at</strong> make up the criminal justice system. The<br />
survey is organized around the three major components <strong>of</strong> the<br />
criminal justice system: police, courts, and corrections.<br />
2006. INDUSTRIAL AND BUSINESS SECURITY. 3 cr. An examin<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
<strong>of</strong> the basic problems, procedures, and needs in the field <strong>of</strong><br />
security work. A comparison <strong>of</strong> priv<strong>at</strong>e agencies, hotels, retail and<br />
industrial enterprises which handle their own security with priv<strong>at</strong>e<br />
and public security organiz<strong>at</strong>ions. Emphasis is given to the role<br />
<strong>of</strong> priv<strong>at</strong>e, industrial, and business security systems and their<br />
rel<strong>at</strong>ionship to the criminal justice system.<br />
2030. THE POLICE. 3 cr. An in-depth examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the law<br />
enforcement sub-system <strong>of</strong> the criminal justice system. Includes<br />
historical precedents to American systems, the diversity <strong>of</strong><br />
agencies and their roles, the internal components <strong>of</strong> agencies,<br />
and their interrel<strong>at</strong>ionships with other system components and<br />
other social and legal agents and agencies. Prerequisite: 1001 or<br />
approval <strong>of</strong> the program director.<br />
2033. FORENSICS. 3 cr. An overview <strong>of</strong> techniques applied in<br />
identific<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> human skeletal remains for the medicolegal<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essions, including assessment <strong>of</strong> age, sex, ancestry, trauma,<br />
and disease; occup<strong>at</strong>ional stress markers; procedures for search/<br />
recovery <strong>of</strong> human remains; and estim<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> time since de<strong>at</strong>h<br />
(Same as ANTS and SOCL 2033).<br />
2050. COURTS AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE. 3 cr. Examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
court component <strong>of</strong> the criminal justice system. Emphasis on<br />
structure, roles, and functions <strong>of</strong> courts and their rel<strong>at</strong>ionship to<br />
other system components and social institutions. Prerequisite:<br />
1001 or approval <strong>of</strong> program director.<br />
2070. CORRECTIONS. 3 cr. An in-depth examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Corrections component <strong>of</strong> the criminal justice system.<br />
Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> correctional practices and philosophy,<br />
historically and systemically studied, including law, sentencing,<br />
and appell<strong>at</strong>e review as each rel<strong>at</strong>es to the correctional process.<br />
Survey <strong>of</strong> correctional components: community-based programs,<br />
institutions, administr<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>of</strong>fender c<strong>at</strong>egories, classific<strong>at</strong>ion, and<br />
tre<strong>at</strong>ment. Prerequisite: For Criminal Justice majors only—1001<br />
or approval <strong>of</strong> program director.<br />
2093. CRIMINAL LAW. 3 cr. Examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> substantive criminal law<br />
with emphasis on history, theory, classific<strong>at</strong>ion and elements <strong>of</strong><br />
crimes, elements <strong>of</strong> pro<strong>of</strong>, and other issues rel<strong>at</strong>ed to criminal<br />
law. Prerequisite: 1001 or approval <strong>of</strong> program director.<br />
2099. OVERVIEW OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. 1 cr. A<br />
capstone course for the integr<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> knowledge concerning<br />
the criminal justice system and criminal law with some <strong>at</strong>tention<br />
to current legal issues in law enforcement and corrections.<br />
Restricted to students receiving the Associ<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> Arts Degree in<br />
Criminal Justice. Registr<strong>at</strong>ion is required during the semester in<br />
which the degree is to be received.<br />
3001. CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCEDURE AND EVIDENCE. 3 cr.<br />
Analysis <strong>of</strong> procedural law rel<strong>at</strong>ed to due process. Evidence<br />
and rules <strong>of</strong> law rel<strong>at</strong>ed to evidence are examined. Prerequisite:<br />
CJUS 2093 or approval <strong>of</strong> program director.<br />
3003. COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONS. 3 cr. An in-depth<br />
study <strong>of</strong> correctional programs, practices, and theory within<br />
the American community. Survey <strong>of</strong> community corrections<br />
in terms <strong>of</strong> historical contributions; legal, social, and ethical<br />
consider<strong>at</strong>ions; pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism; roles <strong>of</strong> staff, administr<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />
and community resources; and rel<strong>at</strong>ionships among and within<br />
community systems. Prerequisite: 1001, 2070, or approval <strong>of</strong><br />
program director.<br />
3008. SUBSTANCE ABUSE. 3 cr. Analysis <strong>of</strong> the social, physical, and<br />
psychological impact <strong>of</strong> substance abuse. Examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> types,<br />
incidence, and forms <strong>of</strong> abuse and an analysis <strong>of</strong> social and legal<br />
reactions. Social trends and laws are examined to provide the<br />
student with found<strong>at</strong>ions for a critical and analytical examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />
substance abuse. Prerequisite: 1001 or approval <strong>of</strong> program director.<br />
3010. CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS. 3 cr. Analysis <strong>of</strong> the structure<br />
and function <strong>of</strong> prison staffing, prison oper<strong>at</strong>ions, the convict<br />
world, prison violence, and jails. Prerequisite: 1001, 2070, or<br />
approval <strong>of</strong> program director.<br />
3015. VICTIMOLOGY. 3 cr. An overview <strong>of</strong> methods th<strong>at</strong> address<br />
victims' needs in the criminal justice system. Prerequisite: CJUS<br />
1001, and 2070.
