procedures and m<strong>at</strong>erials for group piano instruction with an<br />

3066. COUNTERPOINT I. 2 cr. Introduction to 18th century<br />
counterpoint. Composition <strong>of</strong> two-voice exercises. Analysis <strong>of</strong><br />
two, three and four-voice compositions. Prerequisites: MUSC<br />
2004 with a grade <strong>of</strong> “C” or better.<br />
3073. SONG WRITING. 3 cr. Song writing investig<strong>at</strong>ed through<br />
listening, discussion, and practice. A survey <strong>of</strong> style, form and<br />
form<strong>at</strong>, concluding with the production <strong>of</strong> student-composed<br />
songs. Prerequisite: MUSC 1001 or approval <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />

4066. COUNTERPOINT II. 2 cr. Advanced concepts in contrapuntal<br />
styles with an emphasis on the 18th century counterpoint<br />
practices. Analytical techniques and composition are included<br />
and culmin<strong>at</strong>e in the composition <strong>of</strong> a four-voice fugue.<br />
Prerequisites: MUSC 3066 with a grade <strong>of</strong> “C” or better.<br />
4071. COMPOSITION I. 2 cr. Musical composition instruction based on<br />
methodologies <strong>of</strong> the 20th and 21st century with an emphasis on<br />
chamber music writing. Prerequisite: Two credits <strong>of</strong> MUSC 2075<br />
and approval <strong>of</strong> the music theory faculty.<br />
4087. VOICE PEDAGOGY. 2 cr. A study <strong>of</strong> the teaching methods,<br />
techniques, and m<strong>at</strong>erials for the voice studio. Prerequisite:<br />
Music 3041 or senior standing. Required <strong>of</strong> all vocal performance<br />
majors.<br />
4090. FULL RECITAL. 1 cr. The prepar<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> a full recital for public<br />
performance including music appropri<strong>at</strong>e to the senior level <strong>of</strong><br />
applied study or composition.<br />
4091. HISTORICAL SURVEY I. 3 cr. each. The first <strong>of</strong> a two-course<br />
sequence covering the major eras <strong>of</strong> Western music. Topics<br />
include discussion <strong>of</strong> major composers, styles, and genres from<br />
approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 1750 until the present, as well as the influence<br />
<strong>of</strong> other cultures on Western music. Composers and their<br />
works are situ<strong>at</strong>ed within a larger cultural and historical context.<br />
Emphasis is placed on aural identific<strong>at</strong>ion and written analysis <strong>of</strong><br />
represent<strong>at</strong>ive works from a variety <strong>of</strong> time periods. A research<br />
paper and accompanying assignments form a significant portion<br />
<strong>of</strong> the course grade. Students will be introduced to electronic<br />
resources for music research. For music majors, open to others<br />
by approval <strong>of</strong> the head <strong>of</strong> Division <strong>of</strong> Music. Prerequisite:<br />
MUSC 1093. Required course for all B.M. and B.M.E. majors,<br />
regardless <strong>of</strong> concentr<strong>at</strong>ion. F.<br />
