OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT<br />

Associ<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> Science<br />

The Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy Assistant Program<br />

is divided into two segments, pre-occup<strong>at</strong>ional therapy<br />

assistant (POTA) and occup<strong>at</strong>ional therapy assistant<br />

(OCTA), including Level II Fieldwork not to exceed twentyfour<br />

weeks in approved clinical settings scheduled and<br />

coordin<strong>at</strong>ed by the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Louisiana</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Monroe</strong>.<br />

The Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy Assistant Program<br />

is accredited by the Accredit<strong>at</strong>ion Council for<br />

Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy Educ<strong>at</strong>ion (ACOTE), <strong>of</strong> the<br />

American Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy Associ<strong>at</strong>ion, P.O. Box<br />

31220, Bethesda, MD 20824-1220, (301) 652-2682.<br />

Gradu<strong>at</strong>es <strong>of</strong> the program will be eligible to sit for the<br />

n<strong>at</strong>ional certific<strong>at</strong>ion examin<strong>at</strong>ion for the Occup<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

Therapy Assistant administered by the N<strong>at</strong>ional Board<br />

for Certific<strong>at</strong>ion in Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy (NBCOT). After<br />

successful completion <strong>of</strong> this examin<strong>at</strong>ion, the individual<br />

will be a Certified Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy Assistant (COTA).<br />

Many st<strong>at</strong>es require licensure in order to practice; however,<br />

the majority <strong>of</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e licenses are usually based in part<br />

on the results <strong>of</strong> the NBCOT Certific<strong>at</strong>ion Examin<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

A felony conviction may affect a gradu<strong>at</strong>e’s ability to sit<br />

for the NBCOT certific<strong>at</strong>ion examin<strong>at</strong>ion or <strong>at</strong>tain st<strong>at</strong>e<br />

licensure; therefore, if you are concerned about an<br />

issue, the st<strong>at</strong>us <strong>of</strong> this must be determined prior to the<br />

applic<strong>at</strong>ion to the pr<strong>of</strong>essional portion <strong>of</strong> the program<br />

through the st<strong>at</strong>e licensing board and NBCOT.<br />

ADMISSION TO PRE-OCCUPATIONAL<br />

THERAPY ASSISTANT (POTA)<br />

Beginning freshmen who seek admission to the first<br />

segment <strong>of</strong> the Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy Assistant Program<br />

(POTA) must meet the general admission requirements<br />

for admission to the <strong>University</strong>. Applic<strong>at</strong>ions to ULM are<br />

submitted to the <strong>University</strong> Admissions Office. Students<br />

transferring from other divisions <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> and<br />

from other accredited colleges and universities should<br />

additionally have an overall academic record which<br />

indic<strong>at</strong>es potential for success in an Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy<br />

Assistant Program. Advising each semester is required.<br />

Students must go to the Student Success Center to<br />

have advising or developmental flags removed. Students<br />

entering the program with transfer credit must request a<br />

transcript review from the department to determine wh<strong>at</strong><br />

coursework will be credited to the degree plan.<br />

A grade <strong>of</strong> “C” or better is required for all occup<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

therapy assistant coursework contributing to the Associ<strong>at</strong>e<br />

<strong>of</strong> Science Degree. Completion <strong>of</strong> the pre-pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

segment <strong>of</strong> the Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy Assistant Program<br />

(POTA) requirements does not guarantee admission to<br />

the pr<strong>of</strong>essional segment <strong>of</strong> the Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy<br />

Assistant Program (OCTA).<br />

Admission into the pr<strong>of</strong>essional segment <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy Assistant Program (OCTA) is on<br />

a competitive basis with enrollment determined annually<br />

based on the availability <strong>of</strong> resources <strong>of</strong> the Occup<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

Therapy Department.<br />

ADMISSION TO OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY<br />

ASSISTANT PROGRAM<br />

Applicants for admission to the pr<strong>of</strong>essional segment<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy Assistant Program (OCTA)<br />

must complete the following minimum criteria by the<br />

end <strong>of</strong> the spring semester th<strong>at</strong> applic<strong>at</strong>ion is made:<br />

1) possess a minimum, uncorrected cumul<strong>at</strong>ive grade<br />

point average <strong>of</strong> 2.700 on a 4.000 scale in all previous<br />

coursework <strong>at</strong>tempted <strong>at</strong> higher institutions <strong>of</strong> <strong>at</strong>tendance<br />

and a minimum 2.700 uncorrected grade point average<br />

in all hours toward the OTA degree; 2) completion <strong>of</strong> 30<br />

[32] hours <strong>of</strong> required pre-pr<strong>of</strong>essional coursework in the<br />

Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy Assistant Program with a grade <strong>of</strong><br />

“C” or better (see course descriptions for prerequisites).<br />

These hours must include Biology 1014, 1015 and<br />

Psychology 2078. NOTE: It is strongly recommended th<strong>at</strong><br />

all 33 [35] pre-pr<strong>of</strong>essional hours be completed by the end<br />

<strong>of</strong> the spring semester <strong>of</strong> applic<strong>at</strong>ion to the pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

program. However, students may apply with 30 [32] <strong>of</strong> the<br />

required credits completed with a grade <strong>of</strong> “C” or better.<br />

Criteria and procedures for applic<strong>at</strong>ion to the<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional segment <strong>of</strong> the Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy<br />

Assistant Program are available <strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Louisiana</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Monroe</strong> Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy web site<br />

and through the Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy Department<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice. Completed applic<strong>at</strong>ions are to be submitted to<br />

the Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Admissions Committee by April 1 for<br />

consider<strong>at</strong>ion for entry into the Occup<strong>at</strong>ional Therapy<br />

Assistant Program the following Summer II semester
