2001. INTRODUCTION TO ARCHEOLOGY. 3 cr. Survey <strong>of</strong> the history<br />

and development <strong>of</strong> archeology as a science, its place in the<br />

sciences, and an overview <strong>of</strong> the important m<strong>at</strong>erial remains<br />

<strong>of</strong> past human life and activities in selected areas <strong>of</strong> the world.<br />

(Same as GEOG 2001.)<br />

2007. CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY. 3 cr. A compar<strong>at</strong>ive study <strong>of</strong> the<br />

life and organiz<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> human groups throughout the world, with<br />

an emphasis on traditional societies.<br />

2033. FORENSICS. 3 cr. An overview <strong>of</strong> techniques applied in<br />

identific<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> human skeletal remains for the medicolegal<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essions, including assessment <strong>of</strong> age, sex, ancestry, trauma,<br />

and disease; occup<strong>at</strong>ional stress markers; procedures for search/<br />

recovery <strong>of</strong> human remains; and estim<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> time since de<strong>at</strong>h<br />

(Same as CJUS 2033 and SOCL 2033).<br />

3008. OLD WORLD ARCHEOLOGY. 3 cr. A survey <strong>of</strong> the major<br />

archeological sequences <strong>of</strong> prehistoric Eurasia, Africa, and<br />

Oceania. (Same as GEOG 3008.)<br />

4010. THE ARCHEOLOGY OF LOUISIANA INDIANS. 3 cr. An<br />

introduction to the archeology <strong>of</strong> <strong>Louisiana</strong>’s Indian tribes from<br />

Paleo-Indian times (10,000 B.C.) through the historic period.<br />

Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing or permission <strong>of</strong> the<br />

instructor. (Same as GEOG 4010.)<br />

4011. THE ARCHEOLOGY OF NORTH AMERICA. 3 cr. The<br />

archeological background <strong>of</strong> North America from Mexico to the<br />

Arctic Circle; progressive st<strong>at</strong>es <strong>of</strong> development <strong>of</strong> prehistoric<br />

North American cultures. (Same as GEOG 4011)<br />

4014. THE INDIANS OF NORTH AMERICA. 3 cr. Survey <strong>of</strong> the<br />

distribution and principal regional lifeways <strong>of</strong> North American<br />

Indian groups prior to disruption, dispersal, and reserv<strong>at</strong>ionizing.<br />

4021. THE ARCHEOLOGY OF MEXICO. 3 cr. An in-depth view <strong>of</strong><br />

the development <strong>of</strong> pre-Hispanic Mexican and Meso-American<br />

cultures and civiliz<strong>at</strong>ions from Paleo-Indian times to the Spanish<br />

Conquest; an overview <strong>of</strong> the major archeological sites pertinent<br />

to these cultures. (Same as GEOG 4021.)<br />

4022. LATIN AMERICA: PEOPLES AND INSTITUTIONS. 3 cr.<br />

Description <strong>of</strong> indigenous social organiz<strong>at</strong>ions prior to conquest.<br />

Survey <strong>of</strong> community ethnographic studies <strong>of</strong> African, Amerind,<br />

Asi<strong>at</strong>ic and European cultures in contemporary rural and urban<br />

L<strong>at</strong>in America. Prerequisite: Sociology 3007 or approval <strong>of</strong><br />

department head. (Same as SOCL 4022.)<br />

4023. ARCHEOLOGICAL FIELD TECHNIQUES. 6 cr. A field course<br />

introducing the basic techniques <strong>of</strong> archeological mapping,<br />

excav<strong>at</strong>ion, c<strong>at</strong>aloging, specimen prepar<strong>at</strong>ion and preserv<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> soils, physical str<strong>at</strong>igraphy, synecology, and techniques<br />

<strong>of</strong> artifact labor<strong>at</strong>ory analysis. May be repe<strong>at</strong>ed once for a<br />

maximum <strong>of</strong> 12 hours credit. (Same as GEOG 4023.)<br />

4030. BELIEF SYSTEMS. 3 cr. The rel<strong>at</strong>ionship between pre- liter<strong>at</strong>e<br />

belief systems and social structure; myths <strong>of</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion, life cycle<br />

crisis, rites <strong>of</strong> passage, purity and pollution, witchcraft and<br />

supern<strong>at</strong>ural illness. (Same as SOCL 4030.)<br />

4035. ANTHROPOLOGY OF SEX ROLES. 3 cr. An analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

different values th<strong>at</strong> define appropri<strong>at</strong>e masculine and feminine<br />

behavior (sex roles) in a variety <strong>of</strong> cultures. Explores the impact<br />

<strong>of</strong> social institutions on teaching and enforcing sex roles in<br />

traditional and modern societies. (Same as SOCL 4035.)<br />

foreign language environment. Student will be involved in a total<br />

immersion living situ<strong>at</strong>ion and will receive a minimum <strong>of</strong> fifteen<br />

clock hours per week in formal language instruction. May be<br />

repe<strong>at</strong>ed with permission <strong>of</strong> the department head.<br />

study <strong>of</strong> elementary Arabic with an emphasis on the script,<br />

2001. INTERMEDIATE ARABIC I. 3 cr. The continu<strong>at</strong>ion on the<br />

intermedi<strong>at</strong>e level <strong>of</strong> modern standard Arabic. Prerequisite 1002<br />

2002. INTERMEDIATE ARABIC II. 3 cr. Continued study <strong>of</strong> modern<br />

standard Arabic on the intermedi<strong>at</strong>e level. Prerequisite: ARAB<br />

2001 or approval <strong>of</strong> department head.<br />

3007. ARABIC CIVILIZATION. 3 cr. Introduction to the religion <strong>of</strong><br />

Islam and the intellectual and spiritual heritage <strong>of</strong> the Arabs. The<br />

early Arabs, the Revel<strong>at</strong>ion, theology, religious law, Sufism and<br />

modernist phenomena. Architectural, scientific, philosophical and<br />

literary developments.<br />

4001. PRACTICUM IN ARABIC. 3-12 cr. Applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> language skills<br />

in a foreign language environment. Students will be involved<br />

in a total immersion living situ<strong>at</strong>ion and will receive a minimum<br />

The Division <strong>of</strong> Art, <strong>of</strong>fers the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Fine<br />

Arts degree with a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion selected from Art<br />

Educ<strong>at</strong>ion, Ceramics, Drawing, Graphic Design, Painting,<br />

Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture. Art majors are<br />

formally admitted to the BFA program following successful<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> the first Art 3000 portfolio review.<br />

Required for the BFA degree with a concentr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

in Studio Art: 24 hours in the following core found<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

and art history courses _ 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004,<br />

2001, 2002, 4026, 4029; core courses required for a<br />

major also include 18 hours (<strong>at</strong> least one course in<br />

every concentr<strong>at</strong>ion not pursued) selected from 2003<br />

or 2004; 2005, 2046; 2057 or 2058 or 2059 or 2060;<br />

2073; 2081, 4004; plus the completion <strong>of</strong> 24 hours in<br />

a major concentr<strong>at</strong>ion; 12 hours <strong>of</strong> art electives; and a<br />

concentr<strong>at</strong>ion portfolio.<br />
