OBJECTIVES<br />

The College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences assumes a two-fold<br />

responsibility. For ULM students the College provides<br />

the general educ<strong>at</strong>ion courses basic to all curricula in the<br />

<strong>University</strong>. For Arts and Sciences students the College<br />

provides the specific educ<strong>at</strong>ion leading to the Arts and<br />

Sciences degrees.<br />

Within this framework the College leads students to<br />

acquire skill in the following areas:<br />

1. Intellectual inquiry - learning facts and theories<br />

2. Communic<strong>at</strong>ion - writing and speaking with facility<br />

3. Self-expression - enhancing cre<strong>at</strong>ive ability<br />

4. Problem solving - applying the scientific and other<br />

analytical methods<br />

5. Critical thinking - distinguishing opinion from fact;<br />

substanti<strong>at</strong>ing ideas<br />

6. Social values - exhibiting a democr<strong>at</strong>ic spirit, good<br />

citizenship, personal responsibility, and honoring<br />

the worth <strong>of</strong> the individual<br />

ADMISSIONS TO DEGREE<br />

PROGRAMS<br />

I. Admission with Distinction Students granted honors<br />

admission into the <strong>University</strong> will be granted<br />

immedi<strong>at</strong>e entry into their chosen degree program.<br />

II. Provisional and Regular Admission-<br />

Students in these c<strong>at</strong>egories must meet the following<br />

requirements before being granted entry into their<br />

chosen degree programs:<br />

1. S<strong>at</strong>isfactory completion <strong>of</strong> any required<br />

developmental courses.<br />

2. S<strong>at</strong>isfactory completion <strong>of</strong> all courses listed under<br />

the “Freshman Year” requirements <strong>of</strong> the chosen<br />

curriculum with a 2.0 grade-point average.<br />

3. S<strong>at</strong>isfactory completion <strong>of</strong> all special admission<br />

requirements <strong>of</strong> the intended major field <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

Students in provisional and regular admission st<strong>at</strong>us may<br />

not enroll in courses numbered 3000 or above until<br />

they have completed all developmental and freshman<br />

requirements.<br />

All transfer students and all students who interrupt<br />

their college work for one calendar year or more<br />

or who change their curriculum must meet the above<br />

requirements for formal admission to degree st<strong>at</strong>us.<br />

Students must be admitted <strong>at</strong> least one semester (or<br />

summer term) prior to the semester in which they intend to<br />

receive their degree.<br />

Six hours must be taken as a sequence <strong>of</strong> two courses<br />

in either Liter<strong>at</strong>ure or History. The remaining three hours<br />

must be taken in the other discipline’s altern<strong>at</strong>ive field (i.e.<br />

a student must have <strong>at</strong> least one course in either the U.S.<br />

or the World area).<br />
