basic gramm<strong>at</strong>ical structures <strong>of</strong> German with the objectives <strong>of</strong><br />

developing an elementary ability to speak, understand, read and<br />

write the language. Language labor<strong>at</strong>ory required.<br />

1002. ELEMENTARY GERMAN II. 3 cr. each. An introduction to the<br />

basic gramm<strong>at</strong>ical structures <strong>of</strong> German with the objectives <strong>of</strong><br />

developing an elementary ability to speak, understand, read and<br />

write the language. Language labor<strong>at</strong>ory required.<br />

1003. ELEMENTARY CONVERSATION. 3 cr. Especially designed to<br />

meet the needs <strong>of</strong> travelers and students interested in a broad<br />

initi<strong>at</strong>ion to the language. (Does not substitute for 1001, 1002 or<br />

1005. ELEMENTARY GERMAN I AND II. 6 cr. Same as German 1001<br />

and 1002.<br />

1097, 1098, 1099. BEGINNING GERMAN. 1 cr. each. Independent<br />

reading, grammar, and/or convers<strong>at</strong>ion on the elementary level.<br />

Prerequisite: 1002 or 1005.<br />

2001. INTERMEDIATE GERMAN I. 3 cr. each. A continu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> 1001-<br />

1002, with an increased emphasis upon reading and discussion.<br />

(GERO)<br />

Required for an interdisciplinary minor: Gerontology<br />

1001, 2026 and 12 hours <strong>of</strong> Gerontology electives and/<br />

or Psychology 4025, FCSC 4035 or 4036—Total <strong>of</strong> 18<br />

semester hours.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a multidisciplinary Post<br />

Baccalaure<strong>at</strong>e Certific<strong>at</strong>e in Gerontological Studies<br />

with Generalist and Nursing emphases and a Master<br />

<strong>of</strong> Arts with Long-Term Care Administr<strong>at</strong>ion, Program<br />

Administr<strong>at</strong>ion, or Aging Studies concentr<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

1001. BASIC ACTIVITY. 3 cr. An introduction to the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong><br />

Activity Directors, Therapeutic activity practice, and their<br />

integr<strong>at</strong>ion into health care. An examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> practice standards,<br />

practitioner behavior, activity planning, and service delivery.<br />

2026. PERSPECTIVES ON AGING. 3 cr. An orient<strong>at</strong>ion from<br />

practitioners in the community and from an academic<br />

interdisciplinary perspective to programs, services, issues, and<br />

problems in working with older persons. (Same as SOCL 2026,<br />

Formerly SOCL and GERO 4026.)<br />

4027. FIELD WORK IN GERONTOLOGY. 1-3 cr. Student placement in<br />

a senior center, social service agency, nursing home, or hospital<br />

for nine hours per week. Students already employed in an agency<br />

will take Sociology 4028. Prerequisite: approval <strong>of</strong> department<br />

head.<br />

4028. DIRECTED RESEARCH IN GERONTOLOGY. 1-3 cr. Individual<br />

examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> a relevant problem in Gerontology as approved<br />

and directed by student’s major pr<strong>of</strong>essor. Prerequisite: approval<br />

<strong>of</strong> department head.<br />

4058. INTERNATIONAL STUDY: EUROPE. 3 cr. Extended gerontology<br />

field study outside the United St<strong>at</strong>es with guest lectures, visits<br />
