GENERAL INFORMATION<br />
Medical labor<strong>at</strong>ory scientists (medical technologists)<br />
provide objective d<strong>at</strong>a used to make clinical decisions<br />
by the labor<strong>at</strong>ory analyses they perform and evalu<strong>at</strong>e.<br />
Medical labor<strong>at</strong>ory scientists may pursue diverse career<br />
p<strong>at</strong>hs including those in hospital labor<strong>at</strong>ories, clinics,<br />
research, public health, reference labor<strong>at</strong>ories, forensic<br />
labor<strong>at</strong>ories, and educ<strong>at</strong>ional institutions.<br />
The Medical Labor<strong>at</strong>ory Science (MLSC) curriculum<br />
consists <strong>of</strong> two segments, pre-medical labor<strong>at</strong>ory science<br />
(PMLS) and pr<strong>of</strong>essional medical labor<strong>at</strong>ory science<br />
(MLSC). The PMLS segment includes four academic<br />
semesters, or the equivalent, in an accredited college or<br />
university. No grade below a “C” may be transferred from<br />
another college or university.<br />
The MLSC segment consists <strong>of</strong> two calendar<br />
years or four academic semesters. The first year <strong>of</strong><br />
the pr<strong>of</strong>essional program includes on-campus medical<br />
labor<strong>at</strong>ory science didactic and labor<strong>at</strong>ory courses. The<br />
second year includes <strong>of</strong>f-campus practicum rot<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
in affili<strong>at</strong>ed medical labor<strong>at</strong>ories. Medical labor<strong>at</strong>ories<br />
affili<strong>at</strong>ed with the ULM MLSC program include St.<br />
Francis Medical Center, <strong>Monroe</strong>, LA; Iasis Glenwood<br />
Regional Medical Center, West <strong>Monroe</strong>, LA; <strong>Louisiana</strong><br />
St<strong>at</strong>e <strong>University</strong> Health Science Center-Shreveport-<br />
E.A. Conway Medical Center, <strong>Monroe</strong>, LA; West<br />
Carroll Memorial Hospital, Oak Grove, LA; LifeShare<br />
Blood Centers, Shreveport, LA; Northern <strong>Louisiana</strong><br />

accredited by the N<strong>at</strong>ional Accrediting Agency for<br />

Gradu<strong>at</strong>es <strong>of</strong> the program are eligible to sit for the n<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
certific<strong>at</strong>ion examin<strong>at</strong>ion administered by the Board <strong>of</strong><br />
Certific<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the American Society for Clinical P<strong>at</strong>hology.<br />
MISSION STATEMENT<br />
The Medical Labor<strong>at</strong>ory Science Department <strong>at</strong> ULM<br />
is committed to providing northeast <strong>Louisiana</strong> and the<br />
region beyond with competent, ethical gradu<strong>at</strong>es who will<br />
help to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> the community and the n<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
ADMISSION TO PRE-MEDICAL<br />
LABORATORY SCIENCE<br />
Applicants for admission to the pre-pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
curriculum (PMLS) must meet the general admission<br />
requirements for admission to the <strong>University</strong>. Applic<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
are submitted to the <strong>University</strong> Admissions Office.
