4000. MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY. 3 cr. Discussion <strong>of</strong> bacterial,<br />
viral, fungal and parasitic p<strong>at</strong>hogens and the diseases they<br />
cause. Topics include microbial structure, physiology and<br />
genetics, virulence factors and mechanisms <strong>of</strong> tissue damage.<br />
Prerequisite: First Year standing. Credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4020.<br />
4002. PRINCIPLES OF DRUG ACTION I. 5 cr. This course focuses<br />
on the molecular-level composition <strong>of</strong> living organisms in<br />
rel<strong>at</strong>ionship to the biochemical and molecular biopharmaceutical<br />
bases <strong>of</strong> therapeutic intervention with medicinal substances,<br />
and associ<strong>at</strong>ed found<strong>at</strong>ional concepts <strong>of</strong> medicinal and<br />
pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology.<br />
Prerequisites: Credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4020.<br />
4004. PHARMACEUTICAL CALCULATIONS. 2 cr. Fundamentals <strong>of</strong><br />
pharmaceutical measurement and calcul<strong>at</strong>ions. Prerequisite: First<br />
Year standing. Credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4020.<br />
4008. PHARMACEUTICS I. 3 cr. Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> physical pharmacy<br />
and an introduction to liquid oral dosage forms. Prerequisite: First<br />
year standing. Credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4020.<br />
4010. INTRODUCTION TO PHARMACY. 1 cr. An introduction to the<br />
pharmacist in society, modes <strong>of</strong> pharmacy practice, historical<br />
perspectives, fundamentals <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional responsibility.<br />
Prerequisite: First year standing. Credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4020.<br />
4012. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY I. 2 cr. Students will be introduced to<br />
disease processes <strong>at</strong> a cellular level. Prerequisite: First year<br />
standing. Credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4020.<br />
4014. TOP DRUGS AND MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY. 1 cr. Introduction<br />
to the origin and definition <strong>of</strong> medical terms used in healthcare<br />
settings. Arranged by body and organ systems with a heavy<br />
emphasis on pharmacology. Brand/Generic names, dosage<br />
forms, strengths, and therapeutic class <strong>of</strong> current top 200 drugs<br />
are covered. Prerequisites: Credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in PHRD 4020<br />
4020. INTEGRATED LAB SEQUENCE I. 1 cr. First in a six-semester<br />
longitudinal course sequence reinforcing students’ knowledge,<br />
skills, and <strong>at</strong>titudes necessary for current and future pharmacy<br />
practice. Focus on medical terminology, microbiology, drug<br />
action, therapeutics, calcul<strong>at</strong>ions, pharmaceutics, and<br />
p<strong>at</strong>hophysiology. Prerequisite: Credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4000,<br />
4002, 4004, 4006, 4010, 4012, 4014.<br />
4025. PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNOLOGY. 2 cr. Detailed discussions<br />
<strong>of</strong> the stimul<strong>at</strong>ion, production and role <strong>of</strong> inn<strong>at</strong>e and acquired<br />
immune responses, health outcomes in immunop<strong>at</strong>hological<br />
conditions, and the modul<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> immune function using<br />
vaccines and other biotechnology products. Prerequisites: PHRD<br />
4000.<br />
4027. PRINCIPLES OF DRUG ACTION II. 3 cr. A continu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />
PHRD 4002. Prerequisites: Completion <strong>of</strong> PHRD 4002.<br />

4029. PHARMACEUTICS II. 3 cr. Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> drug delivery<br />
systems. Prerequisites: PHRD 4008.<br />
4031. PHARMACY PRACTICE ETHICS AND LAW I. 2 cr.<br />
Distinguishes ethical from other kinds <strong>of</strong> issues in pharmacy,<br />
identifies options open to a pharmacist faced with an ethical<br />
issue. Students will be introduced to administr<strong>at</strong>ive law as it<br />
applies to the practice <strong>of</strong> pharmacy<br />
4033. DRUG INFORMATION RETRIEVAL. 3 cr. Orient<strong>at</strong>ion to current<br />
drug inform<strong>at</strong>ion systems, appropri<strong>at</strong>e search str<strong>at</strong>egies utilizing<br />
primary, secondary and tertiary resources combined with<br />
applic<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> common st<strong>at</strong>istical tests seen in medical liter<strong>at</strong>ure.<br />
4035. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY II. 3 cr. The student will continue to build<br />
on the knowledge from p<strong>at</strong>hophysiology I as complete organ<br />
systems are introduced and the impact <strong>of</strong> diseases on this<br />
systems are studied. Prerequisites: PHRD 4012<br />
4047. PARENTERALS. 1 cr. The course introduces the student to the<br />
pharmaceutics and clinical applic<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> pareneterals. Topics<br />
include calcul<strong>at</strong>ions, aseptic technique, and regul<strong>at</strong>ions impacting<br />
parenterals.<br />
4049. INTEGRATED LAB SEQUENCE II. 1 cr. Second in a sixsemester<br />
longitudinal course sequence reinforcing students’<br />
knowledge, skills, and <strong>at</strong>titudes necessary for current and<br />
future pharmacy practice. Focus on immunology, drug<br />
action, therapeutics, pharmaceutics, law/ethics, inform<strong>at</strong>ics,<br />
p<strong>at</strong>hophysiology, and parenterals. Prerequisites: 4020 and credit<br />
or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in 4025, 4027, 4029, 4031, 4033, 4035, 4047<br />
4050. COMMUNITY INTRODUCTORY PHARMACY PRACTICE<br />
EXPERIENCE. 4 cr. The purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to expose<br />
students to entry-level pharmacy practice through working in a<br />
pharmacy practice site. Prerequisite: PHRD 4031<br />
4052. RESEARCH METHODS AND LITERATURE EVALUATION. 3<br />
cr. Introduction and applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> basic concepts <strong>of</strong> research<br />
methodology and design needed for efficient evalu<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />
utiliz<strong>at</strong>ion and clinical applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> medic<strong>at</strong>ion inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
available in medical liter<strong>at</strong>ure. Prerequisites: PHRD 4033<br />
4054. INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATIONS. 1 cr. Orient<strong>at</strong>ion to<br />
psychosocial and communic<strong>at</strong>ion principles and techniques with<br />
applic<strong>at</strong>ion to pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice environments and clinical<br />
counseling situ<strong>at</strong>ions. Prerequisites: PHRD 4010, 4031, and 4033<br />
4056. BIOPHARMACEUTICS AND PHARMACOKINETICS. 3 cr.<br />
The study <strong>of</strong> the interrel<strong>at</strong>ionship between formul<strong>at</strong>ion factors<br />
and pharmacokinetic aspects <strong>of</strong> drug absorption, distribution,<br />
metabolism, and excretion. Prerequisites: PHRD 4004<br />
4058. NEUROLOGY AND PSYCHIATRY MODULE. 5 cr. Principles<br />
<strong>of</strong> p<strong>at</strong>hophysiology, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, clinical<br />
pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapy (including both<br />
prescription and non-prescription medic<strong>at</strong>ions) as they apply to<br />
neurology/psychi<strong>at</strong>ric drug therapy management. Prerequisites:<br />

4070. INTEGRATED LAB SEQUENCE III. 1 cr. Third in a six-semester<br />
longitudinal course sequence reinforcing students’ knowledge,<br />
skills, and <strong>at</strong>titudes necessary for current and future pharmacy<br />
practice. Focus on drug liter<strong>at</strong>ure evalu<strong>at</strong>ion, communic<strong>at</strong>ions,<br />
biopharmaceutics/pharmacokinetics, neurologic/psychi<strong>at</strong>ric, and<br />
endocrinologic disorders. Prerequisites: credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in<br />
4052, 4054, 4056, 4058, 4074.<br />
4074. ENDOCRINE MODULE. 3 cr. Principles <strong>of</strong> p<strong>at</strong>hophysiology,<br />
pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, clinical pharmacokinetics<br />
and pharmacotherapy (including both prescription and nonprescription<br />
medic<strong>at</strong>ions) as they apply to endocrine drug therapy<br />
management. Prerequisites: credit or registr<strong>at</strong>ion in PHRD 4058<br />
4077. HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS. 3 cr. An overview <strong>of</strong> the structure,<br />
organiz<strong>at</strong>ion, delivery, and financing <strong>of</strong> the U.S. health care<br />
system, managed health care and pharmacy services combined<br />
with the role <strong>of</strong> the pharmacist.<br />
4079. SELF CARE/PATIENT ASSESSMENT I MODULE. 4 cr.<br />
Basic p<strong>at</strong>ient assessment skills required in the delivery<br />
<strong>of</strong> pharmaceutical care and principles <strong>of</strong> self care including:<br />
determining if self care is appropri<strong>at</strong>e and recommending<br />
appropri<strong>at</strong>e self care tre<strong>at</strong>ment. Prerequisites: Second year<br />
