nomencl<strong>at</strong>ure, and mechanistic analysis <strong>of</strong> reactions. One hour<br />

1002. ELEMENTARY CHINESE. 3 cr. A continu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the study <strong>of</strong><br />

Chinese on the elementary level. Prerequisite: a “C” or better in<br />

Chinese 1001 or approval <strong>of</strong> department head.<br />

4000. COMMUNICATION CAPSTONE. 3 cr. Study and applic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

- through research, writing, and oral present<strong>at</strong>ion - <strong>of</strong><br />

communic<strong>at</strong>ion and ethical theories to contemporary issues<br />

appropri<strong>at</strong>e to the students’ interests and prepar<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Prerequisites: Senior st<strong>at</strong>us and completion <strong>of</strong> 21 hours<br />

<strong>of</strong> Communic<strong>at</strong>ion Studies or Mass Communic<strong>at</strong>ions major<br />

requirements.<br />

4090. INTERNSHIP. 2 cr. One semester <strong>of</strong> supervised industry service.<br />

Academic requirements include a final paper and present<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Prerequisites: completion <strong>of</strong> 15 hours in either CMST or MCOM and<br />

the approval <strong>of</strong> the academic advisor faculty internship supervisor<br />

and site manager. (Formerly CMST 4090 and MCOM 4090)<br />

4004, 4051, 4052, or 4053; 4050; COMM 4090; — Total <strong>of</strong><br />

30 semester hours.<br />

A student electing a major in Communic<strong>at</strong>ion Studies<br />

with a Multi-Media Concentr<strong>at</strong>ion must take the following<br />

courses: CMST 1001; 2001; 2060; 3005; 3035, 3044, or<br />

4004; COMM 4090; CMST 1009 or THEA 3021 or THEA<br />

4025; CMST 4020 or THEA 4024; CMST 4050 or THEA<br />

4009; MCOM 3052; THEA 2021. - Total <strong>of</strong> 30 semester<br />

hours.<br />

A student electing a major in Communic<strong>at</strong>ion Studies<br />

has the option <strong>of</strong> choosing an academic minor.<br />

Required for a minor in Communic<strong>at</strong>ion Studies:<br />

CMST 1001; 1018; 2001 or 2060; 3011 or 3030; 4050;<br />

and three hours <strong>of</strong> Communic<strong>at</strong>ion Studies <strong>at</strong> the 3000-<br />

4000 level - Total <strong>of</strong> 18 semester hours.<br />

Required for a major in Speech Educ<strong>at</strong>ion:<br />

Communic<strong>at</strong>ion Studies 1001, 1018, 3005, and<br />

3011; The<strong>at</strong>re 1010, 1011, 2021 and 4025; Mass<br />

Communic<strong>at</strong>ions 2001; Speech-Language P<strong>at</strong>hology<br />

1013; and 5 hours <strong>of</strong> electives in Communic<strong>at</strong>ion Studies.<br />

Total <strong>of</strong> 31 semester hours. (See specific degree plan<br />

Communic<strong>at</strong>ion Studies majors and minors must<br />

1001. FUNDAMENTALS OF COMMUNICATION. 3 cr. Focus is<br />

on the total range <strong>of</strong> communic<strong>at</strong>ion behaviors we engage in<br />

within the contexts <strong>of</strong> intrapersonal, interpersonal, small group,<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ional, public speaking, and mass communic<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

1002. VOICE AND DICTION. 3 cr. A non-technical approach to<br />

developing expressive speech. Emphasis is on phonetics, the<br />

mechanics <strong>of</strong> vocal sound, and oral readings.<br />

1009. FORENSIC SPEAKING LABORATORY. 1 cr. Supervised<br />

particip<strong>at</strong>ion in the intercollegi<strong>at</strong>e deb<strong>at</strong>e program. May be<br />

repe<strong>at</strong>ed for a maximum <strong>of</strong> three hours credit.<br />

1010. HONORS COMMUNICATION STUDIES. 3 cr. Speech taught<br />

more as a liberal art than as a technical art. Emphasis on<br />

developing effective rhetorical skills, problem-solving, critical<br />

thinking, and the place <strong>of</strong> values in establishing humane goals.<br />

Present<strong>at</strong>ions required. Prerequisite: Admission to the Honors<br />

Program or permission <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Undergradu<strong>at</strong>e</strong> Honors Council.<br />

Substitutes for either CMST 1001 or 2001.<br />

1018. INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION. 3 cr. Stresses<br />

practical applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> communic<strong>at</strong>ion concepts and skills.<br />

Emphasis on self-concept, language, perception, listening,<br />

nonverbal communic<strong>at</strong>ion, and resolution <strong>of</strong> interpersonal skills<br />

development.
