3009. ISLAM. 3 cr. Survey <strong>of</strong> Islamic history from the inception in<br />
7th century Arabia to the present day. Special emphasis on the<br />
religious principles and the institutions <strong>of</strong> the civiliz<strong>at</strong>ions to which<br />
it gave rise. Attention is given to those factors th<strong>at</strong> continue to<br />
make Islam an important force in the world today. (Same as<br />
RELG 0309.)<br />
3010. AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY. 3 cr. Black American history<br />
beginning with early West African civiliz<strong>at</strong>ion to the present.<br />
Attention will be devoted to immigr<strong>at</strong>ion, the slave system,<br />
civil rights, and modern black movements with emphasis on<br />
significant African-American leaders. May not be substituted to<br />
meet History requirements in 1011-1012, 2001-2002, or 3005.<br />
3012. EASTERN CIVILIZATION. 3 cr. An introduction to the history <strong>of</strong><br />
non-western cultures. The civiliz<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> the Far East, Africa,<br />
and the Middle East are examined from their beginnings to the<br />
present.<br />
3029. RUSSIAN HISTORY. 3 cr. A survey <strong>of</strong> Russian history from the<br />
founding <strong>of</strong> tsarist Russia to the present.<br />
3030. ENGLISH HISTORY. 3 cr. A survey <strong>of</strong> the English and British<br />
n<strong>at</strong>ional experience from the Saxon period to the present. The<br />
development <strong>of</strong> the English political system will be reviewed, as<br />
will the rise and decline <strong>of</strong> England as a major power. The major<br />
emphasis <strong>of</strong> this class will concentr<strong>at</strong>e on the period 1485 to<br />
1914. England’s rel<strong>at</strong>ionship with both Scotland and Ireland will<br />
also be considered in this period. Prerequisites HIST 1011, 1012.<br />
3031. FRENCH HISTORY. 3 cr. A survey <strong>of</strong> French political institutions,<br />
cultural development, and social structure from 800 to the<br />
present. (Formerly HIST 487).<br />
3099. HISTORIAN’S CRAFT. 3 cr. Historical research methods and an<br />
introduction to historiography. Prerequisite: History majors only or<br />
instructor permission.<br />

4008. CONTEMPORARY HISTORY. 3 cr. A historical perspective on<br />
issues and events <strong>of</strong> the contemporary world. Prerequisites: HIST<br />

4020. THE HOLOCAUST. 3 cr. This course will confront the<br />
background, events, and consequences <strong>of</strong> the extermin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />
European Jews during World War II. Prerequisite: HIST 1012,<br />
2002 or consent <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />
4030. WORLD WAR II. 3 cr. An examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the causes, conduct,<br />
and immedi<strong>at</strong>e afterm<strong>at</strong>h <strong>of</strong> World War II giving <strong>at</strong>tention to<br />
major military campaigns and experiences <strong>of</strong> war as seen by<br />
military leaders and comb<strong>at</strong>ants in Asia, Europe, and the Pacific.<br />
Prerequisite: HIST 1012 or 2002.<br />
4036. THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. 3 cr. The growing sectional conflict<br />
between the industrial North and the agrarian South; secession;<br />
major wartime problems <strong>of</strong> the Union and the Confederacy;<br />
principal military campaigns in the War’s various the<strong>at</strong>ers; the<br />
significance <strong>of</strong> the Civil War in American History. Prerequisite:<br />
HIST 2001.<br />
4040. NEW SOUTH, 1865-PRESENT. 3 cr. The political, economic,<br />
and social development <strong>of</strong> the South from Reconstruction to the<br />
present. Prerequisites: HIST 2002. (Formerly HIST 487).<br />
4046. U.S. MILITARY HISTORY, 1775-1865. 3 cr. This course<br />
examines the development <strong>of</strong> the U.S. Military and the wars it<br />
fought from the American Revolution through the Civil War.<br />
4047. U.S. MILITARY HISTORY, 1865-PRESENT. 3 cr. This course<br />
examines the development <strong>of</strong> the U.S. Military and the wars it<br />
fought from the end <strong>of</strong> the Civil War to the present.<br />
4049. NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY. 3 cr. This course <strong>of</strong>fers an<br />
overview <strong>of</strong> N<strong>at</strong>ive American history from pre-Columbian times to<br />
the present. Topics include N<strong>at</strong>ive American culture, interaction<br />
with Europeans, and rel<strong>at</strong>ions with the U.S. government.<br />
Prerequisites: History 2001 or 2002.<br />

4050. AMERICAN COLONIAL. 3 cr. A social history class which<br />
will concentr<strong>at</strong>e on four main communities established<br />
in North America: New England, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and<br />
the Appalachian frontier. The role th<strong>at</strong> religion, Trans-Atlantic<br />
influences, and the environment played in the form<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> these<br />
communities will be considered, as will their different reactions<br />
to N<strong>at</strong>ive Americans, slaves, and the role <strong>of</strong> women. The Anglo-<br />
American imperial rel<strong>at</strong>ionship to 1775 will also be reviewed.<br />
Prerequisite: HIST 2001.<br />
4051. THE REVOLUTIONARY GENERATION. 3 cr. The history <strong>of</strong><br />
the American Revolution, placing it within the Trans-Atlantic<br />
community, its impact upon domestic society, and its influence<br />
upon the revolutionary gener<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> England, Ireland, and<br />
Europe generally. In considering political developments, <strong>at</strong>tention<br />
will also focus upon the Revolution’s impact upon women,<br />
N<strong>at</strong>ive Americans and the institution <strong>of</strong> slavery. The course will<br />
conclude with a review <strong>of</strong> the Articles <strong>of</strong> Confeder<strong>at</strong>ion and the<br />
weaknesses <strong>of</strong> the early Federal Union. Prerequisite: HIST 2001.<br />
4052. THE AGE OF JEFFERSON AND JACKSON. 3 cr. An<br />
investig<strong>at</strong>ion into the complex character <strong>of</strong> Jefferson, his political<br />
impact upon the Republic and the ambiguous legacy he left after<br />
1826. Andrew Jackson will be considered as a symbol <strong>of</strong> a new<br />
democr<strong>at</strong>ic age. The new Jacksonian spirit will be reviewed in<br />
the light <strong>of</strong> social reform movements, 1815 to 1840. The course<br />
will also consider N<strong>at</strong>ive-American cultures and the changing<br />
<strong>at</strong>titudes towards slavery. Prerequisite: HIST 2001.<br />
4060. THE OLD SOUTH. 3 cr. The political, economic, and social<br />
development <strong>of</strong> the ante-bellum South. Settlement p<strong>at</strong>terns;<br />
sectional distinctiveness; political ideology; development <strong>of</strong><br />
slavery and the plant<strong>at</strong>ion system; abolitionism and slavery<br />
defense; and the growth <strong>of</strong> southern n<strong>at</strong>ionalism. Prerequisite:<br />
HIST 2001.<br />
4064. THE AMERICAN FRONTIER. 3 cr. The westward movement<br />
in America from 1607 to 1890, emphasizing the process<br />
<strong>of</strong> pioneering and the influence <strong>of</strong> the frontier on American<br />
institutions.<br />
4070. HISTORY OF BIBLICAL LANDS. 3 cr. This course is an<br />
introduction to the m<strong>at</strong>erial culture, cultural history and<br />
cultural process <strong>of</strong> the biblical world, with an emphasis on the<br />
connections between archaeology and the Bible. Prerequisites:<br />
History 1011.<br />
4072. COLONIAL LATIN AMERICA. 3 cr. Discovery, explor<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />
and settlement; Spanish and Portuguese colonial systems;<br />
political, economic, and social development including the wars <strong>of</strong><br />
independence.<br />
4073. MODERN LATIN AMERICA. 3 cr. The L<strong>at</strong>in American st<strong>at</strong>es<br />
from independence to the present; internal problems and<br />
progress; intern<strong>at</strong>ional rel<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />
4074. HISTORY OF ANCIENT EGYPT. 3 cr. This course is intended as<br />
a broad survey <strong>of</strong> Egyptian history, culture and archaeology from<br />
the Old Kingdom down to the Roman period. It is an introduction<br />
to the social, economic, cultural and religious developments <strong>of</strong><br />
the first n<strong>at</strong>ion st<strong>at</strong>e in the world. Prerequisites: History 1011.<br />
4075. ANCIENT NEAR EAST AND GREECE. 3 cr. Egypt, Sumer,<br />
Assyria, Babylonia and other civiliz<strong>at</strong>ion in the Ancient Near<br />
East from 3100 B.C.E.; Greece from the Mycenaean Period<br />
through Periclean Athens. Emphasis on archaeological<br />
evidence, political developments, cultural accomplishments.<br />
Prerequisite: HIST 1011.<br />
4076. ANCIENT ROME. 3 cr. Ancient Rome from Romulus through the<br />
early Empire, with an emphasis on the development <strong>of</strong> Roman<br />
traditions during the Republic and the transition from Republic<br />
to Empire under the Julio-Claudians. Roman government, class<br />
structure, and the significance <strong>of</strong> important historical figures will<br />
be emphasized. Prerequisite: HIST 1011.
