<strong>Our</strong> goal is to be, on a susta<strong>in</strong>able basis, the most profitable company <strong>in</strong> paper, pulp and cellulose-based<br />
solutions. <strong>Our</strong> key measures are Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) and to beat our cost of capital, as<br />
a m<strong>in</strong>imum. We also prioritise cash generation and improv<strong>in</strong>g our balance sheet structure.<br />
We aim to build on our lead<strong>in</strong>g position <strong>in</strong> the coated f<strong>in</strong>e paper market and explore opportunities across the<br />
broad spectrum of coated paper, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g grow<strong>in</strong>g our speciality bus<strong>in</strong>ess. We plan to grow our chemical cellulose<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess and are expand<strong>in</strong>g our low-cost fibre base <strong>in</strong> Southern Africa. We are <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> energy reduction and<br />
self-sufficiency projects and extract<strong>in</strong>g chemicals from renewable wood resources. Core to our bus<strong>in</strong>ess is our<br />
Southern African portfolio of packag<strong>in</strong>g paper, newspr<strong>in</strong>t, pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g paper, and tissue paper.<br />

We fell well short of our target <strong>in</strong> all regions.<br />
We have acted to improve our <strong>performance</strong>, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a turnaround <strong>in</strong> our<br />
fourth quarter, particularly <strong>in</strong> North America.<br />
We expect to see the results of these actions <strong>in</strong> the next year.<br />
The Saiccor Mill expansion reached full production by year-end, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />
chemical cellulose production capacity by 30%.<br />
The M-real acquisition strengthened our position <strong>in</strong> the European coated<br />
paper market. Performance <strong>in</strong> the comb<strong>in</strong>ed bus<strong>in</strong>ess is expected to<br />
improve as further synergies are achieved and market conditions improve.<br />
We cont<strong>in</strong>ued to expand our plantation <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> Southern Africa<br />
through tree breed<strong>in</strong>g and selected acquisitions. Subsequent to year-end<br />
we agreed to acquire 14,000 hectares of developed softwood plantations<br />
close to Ngodwana Mill.<br />
Trial plant<strong>in</strong>gs of Eucalyptus <strong>in</strong> Mozambique have grown well and the<br />
project is mak<strong>in</strong>g progress.<br />
We made significant progress <strong>in</strong> reduc<strong>in</strong>g variable costs with a focus on<br />
product design, procurement, waste reduction and operat<strong>in</strong>g efficiency.<br />
Actions to reduce fixed costs <strong>in</strong>cluded the closure of Blackburn Mill,<br />
Muskegon Mill, Paper Mach<strong>in</strong>e No 5 at Maastricht Mill, and discussions<br />
with labour representatives about our <strong>in</strong>tention to close Usutu Pulp Mill and<br />
possibly Kangas Mill. The number of people employed <strong>in</strong> each region was<br />
reduced through efficiency measures.<br />
Synergy benefits follow<strong>in</strong>g the M-real acquisition for the n<strong>in</strong>e months to<br />
September <strong>2009</strong> totalled r73 million, above our target of r60 million.<br />
<strong>Our</strong> market research has shown that our customers place customer service<br />
and reliability high on their list of requirements. We believe we have made<br />
good progress <strong>in</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g customer needs dur<strong>in</strong>g the year and cont<strong>in</strong>ue to<br />
work closely with customers on meet<strong>in</strong>g their needs more profitably.<br />
A higher proportion of our sales came from newly designed products,<br />
particularly <strong>in</strong> North America.<br />
<strong>Our</strong> values were derived from <strong>in</strong>ternal dialogue and <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> our<br />
Code of Ethics, Strategy Statement and Susta<strong>in</strong>ability Charter. The rollout of<br />
our values as part of the <strong>in</strong>tegration of M-real has helped to create a<br />
motivated s<strong>in</strong>gle team <strong>in</strong> Europe.<br />
We improved our audited BEE score to 54 po<strong>in</strong>ts from 41 po<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />
We envisage undertak<strong>in</strong>g a broad-based equity transaction with<strong>in</strong> the<br />
next year.<br />
