General def<strong>in</strong>itions<br />
bleached pulp – pulp that has been bleached by means of<br />
chemical additives to make it suitable for f<strong>in</strong>e paper production<br />
chemical cellulose – highly purified chemical pulp <strong>in</strong>tended<br />
primarily for conversion <strong>in</strong>to chemical derivatives of cellulose<br />
and used ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> the manufacture of viscose staple fibre,<br />
solvent sp<strong>in</strong> fibre and filament<br />
chemical pulp – a generic term for pulp made from wood fibre<br />
that has been produced <strong>in</strong> a chemical process<br />
coated f<strong>in</strong>e paper – coated paper made from chemical pulp.<br />
Also referred to as coated free sheet<br />
coated papers – papers that conta<strong>in</strong> a layer of coat<strong>in</strong>g material on<br />
one or both sides. The coat<strong>in</strong>g materials, consist<strong>in</strong>g of pigments<br />
and b<strong>in</strong>ders, act as a filler to improve the pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g surface of the<br />

coated mechanical – coated paper made from groundwood<br />
pulp which has been produced <strong>in</strong> a mechanical process, primarily<br />
used for magaz<strong>in</strong>es, catalogues and advertis<strong>in</strong>g material<br />
coated woodfree – coated paper made from chemical pulp<br />
which is made from wood fibre that has been produced <strong>in</strong> a<br />
chemical process, primarily used for high end publications and<br />
advertis<strong>in</strong>g material<br />
corrugat<strong>in</strong>g medium – paperboard made from chemical and<br />
semi-chemical pulp, or waste paper, that is to be converted to<br />
a corrugated board by pass<strong>in</strong>g it through corrugat<strong>in</strong>g cyl<strong>in</strong>ders.<br />

Wood is treated chemically or mechanically to separate the<br />

f<strong>in</strong>e paper – paper usually produced from chemical pulp for<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g purposes and consist<strong>in</strong>g of coated and<br />

FSC – <strong>in</strong> terms of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) scheme,<br />
there are two types of certification. In order for land to achieve<br />
FSC endorsement, its forest management practices must<br />
meet the FSC’s ten pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and other assorted criteria. For<br />
manufacturers of forest products, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g paper manufacturers<br />
like <strong>Sappi</strong>, Cha<strong>in</strong>-of-Custody certification <strong>in</strong>volves <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />
verification of the supply cha<strong>in</strong>, which identifies and tracks the<br />
timber through all stages of the production process from the tree<br />
farm to the end product<br />
Greenhouse gases (GHGs) – the GHGs <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the Kyoto<br />
Protocol are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydro-<br />
fluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulphur hexafluoride<br />

fac<strong>in</strong>gs of corrugated board. L<strong>in</strong>erboard is comb<strong>in</strong>ed with<br />

board used <strong>in</strong> boxes<br />
market pulp – pulp produced for sale on the open market,<br />
as opposed to that produced for own consumption <strong>in</strong> an<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegrated mill<br />
mechanical pulp – pulp produced by means of the mechanical<br />
gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g or ref<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of wood or wood chips<br />
NBSK – Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft pulp. One of the<br />
ma<strong>in</strong> varieties of market pulp, produced from coniferous trees<br />
(ie spruce, p<strong>in</strong>e) <strong>in</strong> Scand<strong>in</strong>avia, Canada and northern USA.<br />
The price of NBSK is a benchmark widely used <strong>in</strong> the pulp and<br />
paper <strong>in</strong>dustry for comparative purposes<br />
newspr<strong>in</strong>t – paper produced for the pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g of newspapers<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ly from mechanical pulp and/or recycled waste paper<br />
OHSAS – is an <strong>in</strong>ternational health and safety standard aimed<br />
at m<strong>in</strong>imis<strong>in</strong>g occupational health and safety risks firstly, by<br />
conduct<strong>in</strong>g a variety of analyses and secondly, by sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

PEFC – the world’s largest forest certification system, the PEFC<br />

pulpwood – wood suitable for produc<strong>in</strong>g pulp – usually not of<br />
