But that condition <strong>of</strong> a laboring vocation nowadays is madepossible by the goods-piling-up machinery <strong>of</strong> capitalism.A traveler from the (ideal, gentle) Communist pl<strong>an</strong>et in Ursula Le Guin’s<strong>The</strong> Dispossessed is startled by the prosperity <strong>of</strong> the “sturdy, self-respectinglookingpeople” in the (ideal, but not-so-gentle) capitalist pl<strong>an</strong>et: “It puzzledhim. He had assumed that if you removed a hum<strong>an</strong> being’s naturalincentive to work—his initiative, his creative energy—<strong>an</strong>d replaced it withexternal motivation . . . he would become a lazy <strong>an</strong>d careless worker.
