Given that Indigenouschildren comprise a small proportion of the total population, compared tonon-Indigenous children, they are overrepresented in the numbers of childrendiagnosed with a STI.• In Queensland, during 2003 and 2004, notifications of STIs for Indigenouschildren aged 10–14 years were higher than non-Indigenous children(6.1 per 1000 compared with 0.2 per 1000, respectively). STI notification ratesfor Indigenous children in remote and regional areas were significantly higherthan those in major cities and inner regional areas (1.5 per 1000 compared with10.8 per 1000) (Department of Communities 2006; Queensland HealthNotifiable Disease Register 2005 (unpublished)).• In 2003 and 2004, in Queensland, STI notification rates for Indigenous peopleaged 15–24 years old were 56.7 per 1000. For non-Indigenous people the ratewas 9.0 per 1000. STI notification rates for Indigenous people aged 15–24 yearsold increased with remoteness, ranging from 18.0 per 1000 in major city areas to115.5 in remote areas (Department of Communities 2006; Queensland HealthNotifiable Disease Register 2005 (unpublished)).Police administrative data on child sexual assault victims for NSW, Victoria,Queensland, WA and the NT can be found in attachment tables 3A.11.5 – 3A.11.49.These data are not comparable across jurisdictions.
