11.6 Future directions in dataEmploymentThe employment data in this Report are from several ABS surveys, including the2004-05 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS),the 2004-05 National Health Survey (NHS), the 2002 National Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander Social Survey (NATSISS), and the 1994 National Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander Survey (NATSIS).Comparisons between Indigenous and non-Indigenous employment are not possiblefor very remote areas, as non-Indigenous data for very remote areas were notcollected in the 2004-05 NHS. There are no comparable Indigenous andnon-Indigenous self employment data at the national level other than those in the2001 Census.Along with the other improvements to Indigenous employment data collection, dataneed to be regularly collected on Indigenous self employment to allow adequatereporting of relevant indicators.Indigenous owned or controlled landSome data on the area of Indigenous owned or controlled land are available. However, area is an imperfect measure of the value or benefits to Indigenous peopleof their land. Further work is needed to research and record the social and economicbenefits that flow from Indigenous ownership and control of land. The National Native Title Tribunal, the Indigenous Land Corporation and theCentre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research have worked to develop a mapbaseddataset to show the entire ‘Indigenous estate’ (that is, all land that is owned orcontrolled by Indigenous people). This could be a useful addition to the Report. However, completing the project would require some central coordination, toaddress definitional and intellectual property issues. Further, such a project wouldneed cooperation and collaboration with State and Territory government agenciesresponsible for recording and mapping areas of the Indigenous estate.Case studies in governance arrangementsThere has been significant progress in examining good Indigenous governance sincethe first Report in 2003. The introduction of the Indigenous Governance Awards hashelped identify and highlight the many examples of good practice. The Indigenous11.72 OVERCOMINGINDIGENOUSDISADVANTAGE 2007
