Box 9.7.3Health Education Unit — Jalaris Aboriginal CorporationThe Jalaris Aboriginal Corporation is a small non-government organisation located inthe north west of WA.A small group of people from the Derby community identified a need for anorganisation that could coordinate a holistic approach to addressing the major issues inDerby. The Jalaris Aboriginal Corporation was formed in 1994 and has developedinnovative programs to deal with family strength and health with a particular focus onmeeting the fundamental needs (such as adequate nutrition) of Indigenous parents andyoung children.Jalaris relies on periodic government, non-government and industry partners to deliverservices to the Derby community and outlying communities and stations. The JalarisAboriginal Corporation firmly believe in philosophy of finding local solutions to localissues.On example is the Health Education Unit, which provides an effective link betweencommunity members and the Derby Aboriginal Health Service. The Health EducationUnit is a caravan with medical equipment and educational information that travels tothe homes of people in Derby and to the outlying communities and stations.The caravan enables senior Indigenous women to connect health service professionalsto mothers and children who need health care but are uncomfortable about going tothe clinic. The service also provides meals on wheels for children and provides asupportive environment for mothers and children to visit and access support.Source: AIFS 2003.Box 9.7.4Improving Care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait IslanderPatients programThe Improving Care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Patients (ICAP) programis a re-orientation of the long standing Koori Hospital Liaison Officer (KHLO) programwhich was established in Victoria in 1982. In 2004, the Victorian Department of HumanService (DHS) partnered with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled HealthOrganisation (VACCHO) to implement a new approach to improving accurateidentification of, and quality care for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients inVictorian health services. The former KHLO program was renamed ‘Improving Care forAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Patients’ to symbolise its shift in focus from inputsto outcomes.
