This Report also includes data on Indigenous peoples’ reporting of overcrowding asa ‘stressor’. These data come from the 2002 NATSISS and the 2004-05 NATSIHSand cover Indigenous people 18 years and older. As discussed above, there aresocial and cultural aspects to consider when defining ‘overcrowding’. The data onstressors may better present Indigenous peoples’ perceptions of overcrowding. All data presented are based on the number of residents in households with at leastone Indigenous person. A household with one or more Indigenous persons may alsocontain non-Indigenous people. Therefore, data reported for the proportion ofpeople in overcrowded households may reflect the presence of some non-Indigenouspeople who were living in households with Indigenous people.Figure 10.3.1 Proportion of Indigenous people 15 years and over living inovercrowded housing, by State/Territory, 2002 and 2004-05 a, b7560Living in overcrowded households 2002 Living in overcrowded households 2004-05Per cent4530150NSW Vic Qld WA SA Tas ACT NT Austa Based on the Canadian National Occupancy Standard for housing appropriateness. b Error bars represent95 per cent confidence intervals around each estimate (see chapter 2 for more information).Source: ABS 2002 NATSISS; ABS 2004-05 NATSIHS; table 10A.3.3.• Figure 10.3.1 shows that in 2004-05, 25.0 per cent of Indigenous people 15 yearsand over in Australia lived in overcrowded houses.• In 2004-05, an estimated 128 300 Indigenous people of all ages (27.0 per cent)lived in overcrowded housing in Australia (table 10A.3.1).• The proportion of Indigenous people living in overcrowded housing variedbetween states and territories (table 10A.3.3).• Between 2002 and 2004-2005, there were no significant differences in the ratesof overcrowding for Indigenous people aged 15 years and over at the State andTerritory or national levels.EFFECTIVEENVIRONMENTALHEALTH SYSTEMS10.25
