“By provid<strong>in</strong>g opportunities for <strong>in</strong>teraction I have seen all children flourish <strong>in</strong> ways we had possibly<br />
been <strong>de</strong>ny<strong>in</strong>g them.” In the words of a 10-year-old pupil respond<strong>in</strong>g to the question: What do<br />
children with complex needs teach us?: “You have to take care of everyone because if we don’t<br />
care life will be sad. It is our responsibility to care.” There are many ma<strong>in</strong>stream schools that, like<br />
Cleves, are constantly striv<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>de</strong>velop <strong>in</strong>clusive provision for all learners. They have all <strong>de</strong>voted<br />
time and energy to review and to change their culture, their policies and their practice, see<strong>in</strong>g that<br />
as the key to <strong>in</strong>clusion.<br />
Er is veel expertise bij personeel<br />
The entire staff is recruited to work <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>clusive sett<strong>in</strong>g. The whole staff is committed to work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with a range of pupils with a range of needs. The Curriculum Support Team have un<strong>de</strong>rtaken a<br />
range of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g opportunities lead<strong>in</strong>g to Diploma qualifications <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the areas of severe<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g difficulties, autism, ICT and special needs and behaviour difficulties. There is an ongo<strong>in</strong>g<br />
programme of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for all Teach<strong>in</strong>g Assistants to ga<strong>in</strong> a recognised qualification, these <strong>in</strong>clu<strong>de</strong><br />
Specialist Teach<strong>in</strong>g Assistant and City and Guilds Certificate for Learn<strong>in</strong>g Support. Non teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
staff have termly opportunities to attend the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessions available at the Tunmarsh Centre<br />
organised by the Inclusive Education Team, these cover all aspects of <strong>in</strong>clusion and support<br />
issues. All support staff have completed tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Manual Handl<strong>in</strong>g and Back Care Advice and<br />
there is an ongo<strong>in</strong>g programme for all staff to participate <strong>in</strong> this tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Visie op Inclusie<br />
The school implements the borough’s policy of Inclusive Education and has 32 places. for children<br />
with high level support needs <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g pupils with multiple and profound learn<strong>in</strong>g difficulties. All<br />
staff, parents/carers and children who are admitted to the school are fully aware of its <strong>in</strong>clusive<br />
nature. All policies and procedures take <strong>in</strong>to account the diversity of children, staff and community<br />
that use the school; for example, the behaviour policy is based on <strong>de</strong>velop<strong>in</strong>g relationships that<br />
take <strong>in</strong>to account issues associated with children with challeng<strong>in</strong>g behaviour. The ethos of the<br />
school is based on the celebration of difference. This is reflected <strong>in</strong> every aspect of school life, for<br />
example the organisation and structure, the curriculum and the learn<strong>in</strong>g environment.<br />

We have the highest expectations and aspirations for all our pupils and are a vibrant and excit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

But staff has come to expect that newcomers soon and recognize that a school that <strong>in</strong>clu<strong>de</strong>s<br />
children with high-level support needs is good for all the children and families <strong>in</strong> the community.<br />
Partnerschap school en ou<strong>de</strong>rs<br />
Positive attitu<strong>de</strong>s to parent, user-friendly <strong>in</strong>formation and procedures and awareness of support<br />
needs are important. There should be no presumption about what parents can or cannot do to<br />
support their children’s learn<strong>in</strong>g. Stereotypic views of parents are unhelpful and should be<br />
challenged. All staff should bear <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d the pressures a parent may be un<strong>de</strong>r because of the<br />
