2.4 Canada, Edmonton Public Schools<br />
Edmonton Public Schools is recognized <strong>in</strong>ternationally for offer<strong>in</strong>g curriculum <strong>in</strong> ways that<br />
complement the unique backgrounds and talents of its stu<strong>de</strong>nts, and is committed to expand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
programs wherever it will support and foster stu<strong>de</strong>nt achievement. The Board of Trustees is<br />
committed to <strong>in</strong>clusive education. The Board of Trustees expects the District to be an <strong>in</strong>clusive<br />
education system with its values reflected <strong>in</strong> District programs, operations and practices. The<br />
attendance area school is the guaranteed po<strong>in</strong>t of entry for all stu<strong>de</strong>nts, and the regular classroom<br />
shall be the first placement option consi<strong>de</strong>red.<br />
An <strong>in</strong>clusive education system is a way of th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and act<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>de</strong>monstrates universal acceptance<br />
of, and belong<strong>in</strong>g for, all stu<strong>de</strong>nts. Inclusive education is a values-based approach to accept<strong>in</strong>g<br />
responsibility for all learners, whether registered <strong>in</strong> District Early Years or school age learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
environments. It is foun<strong>de</strong>d on the belief that all stu<strong>de</strong>nts can learn and reach their full potential given<br />
opportunity, effective teach<strong>in</strong>g, and appropriate resources. An <strong>in</strong>clusive education system supports<br />
every stu<strong>de</strong>nt to be <strong>in</strong>clu<strong>de</strong>d <strong>in</strong> their greater school community. The success of an <strong>in</strong>clusive education<br />
system relies on the engagement, collaboration and <strong>in</strong>volvement of stu<strong>de</strong>nts, parents/guardians, staff<br />
and community.<br />
The Board of Trustees believes all stu<strong>de</strong>nts can learn and is committed to meet<strong>in</strong>g the school<strong>in</strong>g<br />
needs of all stu<strong>de</strong>nts <strong>in</strong> Edmonton Public Schools through the provision of a range of programs and<br />
<strong>in</strong>structional options to accommodate their differ<strong>in</strong>g needs and <strong>in</strong>terests. The Board of Trustees<br />
believes that program implementation should provi<strong>de</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uity and flexibility for stu<strong>de</strong>nt<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g. Eight schools that have <strong>de</strong>monstrated exemplary <strong>in</strong>clusive learn<strong>in</strong>g practices were <strong>in</strong>vited to<br />
participate <strong>in</strong> a project to build a mo<strong>de</strong>l reflect<strong>in</strong>g each school’s unique programs and resources for<br />
diverse learners. Each school-based team was led by a consultant. Consultants were gui<strong>de</strong>d by<br />
Edmonton Public Schools’ vision for enhanc<strong>in</strong>g staff skills; ensur<strong>in</strong>g high-quality teach<strong>in</strong>g practices<br />
and supports for diverse learners; and highlight<strong>in</strong>g skills, practices and supports <strong>in</strong> a new professional<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g mo<strong>de</strong>l.<br />
Each school <strong>de</strong>signed a protocol. Skilled teacher lea<strong>de</strong>rs, supported by adm<strong>in</strong>istration, facilitated the<br />
project’s goal of highlight<strong>in</strong>g best practices of <strong>in</strong>clusive learn<strong>in</strong>g. At each <strong>de</strong>monstration site, vi<strong>de</strong>o was<br />
taken of classroom <strong>in</strong>struction and school culture, and stu<strong>de</strong>nts and staff were <strong>in</strong>terviewed. The vi<strong>de</strong>os<br />
focus on professional learn<strong>in</strong>g that highlights collaborative <strong>in</strong>quiry and reflection, and will be housed<br />
on the Edmonton Public Schools website: www.epsb.ca<br />
As a professional learn<strong>in</strong>g mo<strong>de</strong>l, the <strong>de</strong>monstration site experience is <strong>de</strong>signed to immerse teachers<br />
<strong>in</strong> a learn<strong>in</strong>g cycle of peer observation, collaborative <strong>in</strong>quiry, reflection and action plann<strong>in</strong>g. This<br />
process allows for the personalization of teachers’ learn<strong>in</strong>g. Teachers, accompanied by a facilitator<br />
(an <strong>in</strong>structional coach), visited other teachers’ classrooms to observe <strong>in</strong>clusive learn<strong>in</strong>g practices.<br />
The visits and the collaboration that followed were <strong>in</strong>tegral to the visit<strong>in</strong>g teachers’ learn<strong>in</strong>g. Teachers<br />
improved their practice and <strong>de</strong>veloped methods for observ<strong>in</strong>g and analyz<strong>in</strong>g teach<strong>in</strong>g practices for<br />
<strong>in</strong>clusive learn<strong>in</strong>g. Support<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novation is truly the work of job-embed<strong>de</strong>d professional <strong>de</strong>velopment.<br />
Creat<strong>in</strong>g a shared and ongo<strong>in</strong>g process that is school-focused and that makes a direct connection<br />
between professional learn<strong>in</strong>g and application requires nurtur<strong>in</strong>g. We believe we’ve prepared the<br />
groundwork to make <strong>de</strong>monstration site visits an <strong>in</strong>itiative that will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to f<strong>in</strong>d its home <strong>in</strong><br />
Edmonton Public Schools’ <strong>in</strong>clusive learn<strong>in</strong>g as valuable professional <strong>de</strong>velopment.<br />
