Het vieren van diversiteit in de schoolpraktijk

“To be able to have the community come in and be part of the learning is very important because I think that the
students then make the connection that they are not just students here at Joseph Welsh but that they are
connected to first of all their neighborhood, their city, and then their globe.” 92
Voorwaarde is wel dat je het geven van onderwijs niet als vaststaand programma ziet maar als een
proces. Een reis waar het doel nog niet van bereikt is en waaraan iedereen aan kan bijdragen.
"Becoming more inclusive is a matter of thinking and talking; reviewing and refining practice; and making attempts
to develop a more inclusive culture". 93
Ook de gemeenschap waartoe de school behoort, speelt een belangrijke rol. Hierover is verder niet
veel informatie gevonden in onze inventarisatie. Dit is eigenlijk een thema op zich waar scholen zich
nog meer op kunnen richten. Hoe betrekken we de gemeenschap bij de school? Hoe kan de school
voor de gemeenschap een waardevolle hulpbron zijn? Dit zijn vragen die de school zich in haar
zoektocht naar het vormen van een inclusieve gemeenschap kan stellen.
“Parents like the idea of the community school, they want their kids to be able to walk to school, to have play
dates with kids who lived in the neighbourhood and to have that sense of community where when you're walking
down the street, you're out in the playground, you're at the grocery store, you see people that you know. Parents
here are also very involved in the school and that's also helped to develop that sense of community.” 94
En ook andersom: hoe kan de gemeenschap een hulpbron van voor de school zijn? Ook
hierbij is het van belang om visie te ontwikkelen en de gemeenschap die de school wil zijn uit
te breiden buiten de muren van de school.
“Friends of Cleves are a dedicated group of staff, parents and people from the local community trying to inspire
children to learn and help young people to reach their full potential. We engage young people in constructive
activities that build safe, strong communities. We use the local community and school to encourage learning and
promote healthy lifestyles that will make a real difference to the lives of disadvantaged children, young people and
their families. Any help that could be given would be very much appreciated by the Friends of Cleves, the children
and local community.” 95
4.1.3 Hoge verwachtingen leerlingen staat centraal
Een derde belangrijk element in de inclusieve schoolpraktijk is dat je als school hoge verwachtingen
hebt van alle leerlingen, wat betreft inzet, prestaties en sociaal gedrag. De praktijken die we hebben
gezien nemen geen genoegen met middelmatigheid, en willen voor ieder kind hoogst mogelijk succes
nastreven. Iedere leerling wordt uitgedaagd om zich optimaal te ontwikkelen naar zijn of haar
mogelijkheden binnen de leer- en leefgemeenschap die de school is. De persoonlijke aspecten en
talenten van alle betrokken worden als kracht gezien en ingezet. "Weaving dreams and possibilities" 96
