LARRY GOINS AND SHAUN MCCLOSKEY
If you want speakers to do both a weeknight REIA meeting and a
Saturday workshop, you'll draw better speakers if your weeknight
meeting is on a Wednesday or Thursday night. That way, you can
immediately follow up the weeknight REIA meeting with a
Saturday workshop and not make the speaker’s travel schedule any
more hectic than it may already be.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you have to change the date
your REIA meets. I'm not even suggesting that every speaker is
going to have a problem with it if your meetings are, in fact, on
Monday nights. I'm just saying you may have a harder time getting
some of the bigger fish to do both, so it's something to consider.
Leave Time for the Speaker
Okay, now that we've gotten all the usual stuff out of the way, it's
time to introduce your speaker. Before we do, I can't stress to you
how important it is to get the speaker on stage on time. Many
speakers have their presentation timed to the minute. They know
exactly how long it takes to go from the start of the presentation to
the final close. When you run over and make the speaker start late,
you're inadvertently killing sales. When 9 pm comes, some people
will leave the room whether the speaker is done with his close or
not. The last thing you want to do is make the speaker run late
because you started him late.
I get it that being the front of the room person is a lot of fun to those
of us who enjoy getting in front of an audience. We all like sharing
our own experiences and helping others become successful. The
problem is, some hosts love it just a little too much. Some of you
(you may know who you are, you may not) love to hear yourselves
talk just a little too much.
There was a REIA owner that had a phenomenal association for a
long time, but the owner would get up at the front of the room
before a national speaker went on stage and talk about her dog for a
