RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL REIA MEETING
speaker. Once again, these meetings are not necessarily a huge sales
opportunity, but inviting speakers on a regular basis can help to
continue to provide value to your REIA and improve membership
numbers.
In addition to the regular meetings are actual events. These are a big
deal and have often been in the planning stages for a considerably
longer time than a typical REIA meeting. The audience may include
people who have never attended a REIA meeting, but were drawn in
through effective marketing and the chance to hear from the speaker.
This could consist of a separate event altogether, or it could be tied
to a regular REIA meeting, but what makes this different is the
amount of time and marketing that goes into filling the room.
An event like this could be an all-day event on a Saturday. The
audience will be there for a number of hours, mainly listening to the
speaker and possibly asking questions. (Whether or not a speaker
will take questions during his presentation varies from speaker to
speaker. Make sure you ask the speaker how he wants to handle this
so you can help facilitate if need be.) A lot of the audience may be
unfamiliar with the strategies being taught because these events are
designed to grab the attention of the newbies that have little or no
experience in real estate investing. A speaker for an event like this
needs to be dynamic enough to keep the audience's attention focused
for an extended period of time. They must be able to provide enough
information to keep people from getting bored and distracted.
Nothing is worse than spending your entire Saturday with a speaker
that sounds like the history teacher on Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
"Bueller? Bueller?"
Some REIA groups may also plan much larger events. A weekend
long seminar, for example, is a popular option which requires a
significant investment of time. It is the perfect length for an in-depth
discussion of certain topics, but it can also have a few hidden
pitfalls. An entire weekend event is quite a long time for one
speaker to host, and not every speaker will have the skills needed to
