RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL REIA MEETING
how affective this tool can be! There are a few benefits to this site
and a few things to look out for as well.
One great feature of MeetUp.com is a setting where you can allow
all of your members to email each other as a group directly through
the site. The members love this feature and can choose to opt out of
these group emails if they prefer. I spoke to one investor last week
that loves this feature so much, this alone is one of biggest reasons
he's so loyal to his local REIA. He can create a message as quickly
as it takes to login to the site and send it, and find out from a huge
list of other investors information like who is the best plumber in his
area, where to go to get siding, and more. He simply sends an email
and it instantly goes to the 1,700 people that have signed up to be on
this particular REIA's MeetUp list.
This instant access can be a great thing if you're a member of the
group and want quick information or have a property to wholesale.
It can be a bad thing in the sense that I haven't yet found a way to
filter these messages before they go out to the entire group. This
means that some people may take advantage of spamming the rest of
the group with non-approved advertisements about their businesses.
I heard of a REIA complaining recently because one unknown title
company owner became a member of their REIA on MeetUp.com
and instantly started sending messages promoting his title company
through the group email list. The problem was, the REIA already
had a different title company as a paid sponsor to the group, and
they didn't like it that another title company—which hadn't paid a
dime to be a sponsor—was being exposed to the same people.
Okay, I get that this isn't the end of the world, but I've also heard of
another REIA group starting in a city, going to the existing REIA
groups MeetUp site and emailing the entire list with a few clicks,
letting 2,000+ people know about their new group they're starting.
Yes, it happens. The nerve of some people...
