LARRY GOINS AND SHAUN MCCLOSKEY
While I might sound like I'm contradicting myself with what I said
earlier about welcoming cross promoting with other REIA groups,
someone stealing my list by having unlimited access to it for free is
different than me sharing it voluntarily and getting something in
return.
I also heard of a situation where a REIA owner recently got behind
on paying his account with MeetUp. Granted, it was by accident—
his card had expired, and he no longer used the email address that he
had when he signed up with the group, so he wasn't getting the
notifications saying he needed to update his credit card info. When
MeetUp didn't get payment, they called some of the other competing
groups in his area and basically offered up his group to his
competition—all for the low, low price of taking over the monthly
payment. Needless to say, this was a HUGE problem, since the
owner in this case ran his entire REIA through MeetUp. Overnight,
because of one mistake, his entire REIA business was gone. The
good news is that he was able to call up the other REIA owner that
took over his group and they settled on an undisclosed amount to get
his MeetUp group back. Even still, it came with a price, and I don't
want to run my entire business through something that I have
absolutely no control over.
It may sound like I’m bashing www.MeetUp.com. I'm not. It's an
invaluable tool, and I believe every REIA should make it a part of
their marketing, as it will get tails in the seats and draw people. Just
be careful and know what you're getting yourself into.
• The Opt-In List
Promoting your group through websites and social media is
important, but this section is about promoting specific events. With
that in mind, there is one incredibly useful thing your group's
website can do. When you promote an event through social media,
you are essentially sending the message out into the world and
hoping it will reach people who are interested. Utilizing what's
