8. What freebie goodies are going to be offered as giveaways?
• A due date for when the speaker is to supply marketing
materials to the REIA.
• This is important! Put this in the contact so that you have a
way out if the speaker refuses or can't get you what you need
in time.
9. What happens if the speaker runs over his allotted time?
This is particularly important in a larger weekend type event where
there are multiple speakers. When one speaker goes over his allotted
time, he just bumped back every other speaker for the rest of the
day. If you get two or three speakers that do this over the course of
one day, all of a sudden you have an event that's going on until 10
pm that was supposed to be over at 6 pm. (This does not make the
speakers that are scheduled to go on later in the day happy, as you
can imagine.) I spoke at an event once where my allotted time was
3:30 to 5 pm. I was to be the last speaker of the day. The speaker
that started the day out that morning was to speak from 9 am to
10:30 am. He ended up going until noon, pushing back every
speaker for the whole day. By the time I was able to go on stage, it
was 7 pm and there were only 17 people left in the room. There
should have been more than 200, but the event was announced that
it was scheduled to wrap up at 5 pm. People were worn out and they
left. Not only was I unhappy that I traveled halfway across the
country to speak to only 17 people, the speaker before me was upset
as well, and truthfully, so was the audience.
10. Will the association record the event?
If so, the speaker had better know about it and give their approval
ahead of time. Some speakers are okay with this, and some are not.
I've had some associations want to record me (without my
knowledge) and then sell the recording on their website later.
Speakers may or may not be opposed to this, but if you're going to
