in the Sermon on the Mount, in which Christ condemns
false prophets who claim to be genuine;
in reality they maliciously destroy the faithful:
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in
sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening
wolves.” <strong>The</strong> expression also evokes Aesop’s fable
about the wolf that disguises itself in a sheep’s skin
in order to evade detection by its intended prey.

and most trustworthy of men, but as things turned out he

<strong>The</strong> allusion is to a comic- book heroine modeled
on superman, who made her fi rst appearance in
1942, the creation of Charles Moulton Marston
and Harry Peter. Armed with a magic lasso, she
later became an icon of the feminist movement. In
modern usage the tag is commonly applied, like
superwoman, to any woman who successfully
combines, or attempts to combine, an active home
life with a full- time career. She must be Wonder
Woman to manage the things she does.

Woodstock Icon of the hippie movement of the
1960s. Farmland near the town of Woodstock in
New York State became the venue, in August
1969, for an almost legendary rock concert featuring
such artists as Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, and

and is fondly remembered for its celebration
of antiestablishment values and individual freedom.
