Tom Wolfe’s novel <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> B<strong>on</strong>fi re <strong>of</strong> the Vanities (1987),<br />

fi lmed in 1990, makes fl eeting references to the<br />

events surrounding Sav<strong>on</strong>arola’s tempestuous<br />

career. Some members <strong>of</strong> the Christian right call regularly<br />

subsequently romanticized in the 1967 fi lm B<strong>on</strong>nie<br />

and Clyde, in which they were played by Faye Dunaway<br />

and Warren Beatty. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> noti<strong>on</strong> that the pair<br />

were lovers, as portrayed in the 1967 fi lm, is probably<br />

err<strong>on</strong>eous, as Clyde was homosexual. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> pair<br />

ruled the playground like an underage B<strong>on</strong>nie and Clyde,<br />

threatening to pinch and slap any<strong>on</strong>e who did not hand<br />

over their pocket m<strong>on</strong>ey.<br />

wielded im mense power in re nais sance Italy.<br />
