the 1920s, when secret payments made by the<br />

Mammoth Oil Company to drill <strong>on</strong> a government<br />

oil fi eld at Teapot Dome in Wyoming came to<br />

light, leading ultimately to the trial and impris<strong>on</strong>ment<br />

<strong>of</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Interior Albert B. Fall<br />

(1861–1944), who had received the bribes. Watergate<br />

developed into the biggest po liti cal scandal since the<br />
