<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> phrase, also encountered as lash <strong>of</strong><br />

scorpi<strong>on</strong>s, alludes to 1 Kings 12:11: “My father<br />

hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise<br />

you with scorpi<strong>on</strong>s.” <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> rebels have threatened to<br />

unleash a scourge <strong>of</strong> scorpi<strong>on</strong>s, and the government is<br />

more ner vous today than it has been for years.<br />

is to Ebenezer Scrooge, the penny- pinching<br />

miser who is the central character in A Christmas<br />

Carol (1843) by the British novelist Charles Dickens<br />

Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas<br />

Scythia sent to Darius I, when he approached with<br />

ambassador arrived at the king’s tent and without<br />

a word produced a bird, a frog, a mouse, and fi ve<br />

arrows. It was explained to the king that the Scythians<br />

were warning him to fl y away like a bird, hide<br />

in a hole like a mouse, or swim across the river<br />

like a frog or else suffer death by Scythian arrows<br />

fi ve days later. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> attempted Persian c<strong>on</strong>quest<br />

failed. This gesture <strong>of</strong> Scythian defi ance did nothing in<br />
