tabernacle (tabernakbl) A shrine or other place<br />

<strong>of</strong> worship or by extensi<strong>on</strong> any building, cupboard,<br />

etc., in which something precious is preserved.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> allusi<strong>on</strong> is to the Tabernacle <strong>of</strong> the Old Testament,<br />

a portable sanctuary in which God was worshiped<br />

from the time <strong>of</strong> Moses to Solom<strong>on</strong>. It is<br />

described in Exodus 25–31 as a large tent (the<br />

Latin word tabernaculum meaning “tent”) divided<br />

by a veil creating the holy <strong>of</strong> holies (an inner<br />

chamber), and an outer area called the Holy Place;<br />

the whole structure was surrounded by an enclosure.<br />

the entrances to the underworld. He shuddered at<br />

the thought <strong>of</strong> being c<strong>on</strong>signed to this melancholy<br />

hole in the ground, gaping like Taenarum, the portal to<br />

Hades.<br />
