Michaelmas (mikblmbs) September 29, marking<br />

the feast <strong>of</strong> St. Michael the Archangel. Michael<br />

is identifi ed in the Bible as the prince <strong>of</strong> the<br />

angels, who protected the Jewish people (Daniel<br />

12:1) and led the celestial army against Satan<br />

(Jude 9). Traditi<strong>on</strong>ally Michaelmas Day was <strong>on</strong>e<br />

<strong>of</strong> the four quarter- days up<strong>on</strong> which various<br />

rents and other payments became due; some<br />

British universities still have a Michaelmas term<br />

in the autumn. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> Michaelmas term is relatively<br />

short this year.<br />

Michelangelo (mikblanjblo) A brilliantly gifted<br />

artist or sculptor. Michelangelo di Lodovico Bu<strong>on</strong>arroti<br />

Sim<strong>on</strong>i (1475–1564) was hugely admired in<br />

his own time for his unsurpassed artistic creati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

and is remembered today as <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the giants <strong>of</strong><br />

cultural history. His masterpieces include the statue<br />

<strong>of</strong> David (1501–04) and the stunning ceiling <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Sistine Chapel at the Vatican in Rome (1508–12).<br />

mickey fi nn (mikee fi n) A drugged or doctored<br />

drink, the effect <strong>of</strong> which is to render the drinker<br />

unc<strong>on</strong>scious. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> original Mickey Finn is said to<br />

have worked as a bartender at the L<strong>on</strong>e Star and<br />

Palm salo<strong>on</strong>s in Chicago around 1900. He was<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>i cient at making up a poti<strong>on</strong> that would have<br />

such an effect, using it to rob customers. An essential<br />

ingredient <strong>of</strong> a mickey fi nn is allegedly<br />

chlorine. In modern usage the term may also be<br />

applied to anything else that delivers a debilitating,<br />

mickey fi nn<br />
