arguing that <strong>the</strong> current system is unsustainable. Still, even though Ture was<br />

an elder statesman, <strong>the</strong>re was no match for his onscreen presence and bursts<br />

<strong>of</strong> energy.<br />

In November 2000, Nelson Mandela traveled to Minneapolis to accept<br />

an award for his struggle for human rights. 74 Clyde Bellecourt was <strong>the</strong>re,<br />

and perhaps believing that he could also seek solidarity from South<br />

Africans, he went up to Mandela and shook his hand. He asked him to<br />

support <strong>the</strong> pardon <strong>of</strong> Leonard Peltier (Turtle Mountain Chippewa), who<br />

had been imprisoned since 1977, convicted <strong>of</strong> murdering two FBI agents,<br />

though <strong>the</strong> trial and sentence are deemed unjust by activists around <strong>the</strong><br />

world who have been seeking his pardon. 75 It was a symbolically powerful<br />

moment, <strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se two people shake hands, but nothing came <strong>of</strong> it.<br />

The Black and Red Power generation did not eradicate oppression and<br />

implement <strong>the</strong> revolution as <strong>the</strong>y had hoped. They did not seize <strong>the</strong> power<br />

<strong>the</strong>y wanted. However, at <strong>the</strong> award ceremony in Libya, some twenty years<br />

after <strong>the</strong> rise <strong>of</strong> Black Power and Red Power, <strong>the</strong>se leaders demonstrated a<br />

revolutionary love and commitment to international struggle that must<br />

continue today.
