A second batch was made up by long-time activists of the Walser cause, and they supplied some of the most substantial articles in this volume: they are Volmar Schmid, Max Waibel and Kurt Wanner, who signed revelant essays on language conservation and revival. They belong to a generation of distinguished professors who devoted a lot of time and research to the local variety of Swiss Titsch, producing dictionaries and books that aptly illustrate their fundamental variety of this language. They uphold the well-grounded theory that Walser dialects, all over the Alps, should revive themselves by linking up again with the language of their original Wallis region, overcoming minor word and pronounciation differences. They are also quite active as the organisers of the International Walser Union in Brigg, the cultural capital of all Walsers. A third group was made up of local teachers and cultural promoters, firmly committed to teaching the language and organising all sorts of much needed cultural events. They are Vittorio De La Pierre Zumstein, Nicolas Viquéry, Reverend Ugo Busso. Dr. Vittorio De La Pierre is the incumbent chairman of the permanent council for the preservation of Walser language and culture with the Regional government of the Aosta Valley. He has followed the culture of his people for several decades and is, along with Reverend Ugo Busso, one of the founding fathers of Walser culture in that valley. Reverend Ugo Busso himself looks after one of the most precious offsprings of the cultural endeavours of that valley, the beautiful, multilingual and colourful magazine “Augusta”, a true mother lode of texts in all of the dialectal varieties, besides containing articles in French, Italian, Piedmontese and German. Sergio Gilardino spoke for a group of language researchers compiling the last in a long series of dictionaries, but the first which deals with Titzschu as a language and no longer as a dialect. He is an advocate of a unifying strain that would upgrade Titzschu from an oral-only dialect to a modern language, capable of expressing modern concepts and naming all objects, while at the same time retaining its unique value as an ancestral language. A place all of its own goes to Enrico Rizzi, who prepared an exhaustive list of literary works in Titsch, stunning the audience which had thus far known him as one of their foremost historians. Prof. Rizzi needs no introduction to Walsers and to the general public on either sides of the Alps. His works, translated into German, have had a very wide circulation and he never tires of updating and enlarging them. His writings are the most reliable source of historical information on Walsers. But along the way he must have taken very good note of works written in one or 11
another of the many dialects and provided a much needed list to our information gathering campaign. Marco Angster and Monica Valenti brought us the much needed input from the local youth. Both had just written their theses on a Walser language theme and both gave us an excerpt of their work, an example we hope will be followed by other university graduates, as it provides precious information about the peculiarities of Titsch’s grammar and lexicon. Last, but not the least, all the laws, bylaws and regulations concerning the safeguard of minorities’ languages in the Aosta Valley were outlined by Saverio Favre, a scholar working for the Regional Bureau of Ethnology and Linguistics. Let us never forget research, compilations, meetings, publications and conferences are made all possible by governmental decrees and laws. An in-depth knowledge of their intricate nature and multiplicity is an indispensable step to securing the means to continue working. Unfortunately not all those who took the floor handed in their essays, so three papers could not be included in this volume. Much needed and precious advice on how to include all of the noteworthy aspects of this diverse cultural scenario and connect them into a meaningful whole were supplied by Dr. Flaminia Montanari, who went far beyond the call of duty to make this a most fruitful and like-minded meeting. As we hand this volume to the printers, we already look forward to the coming international conferences on Walser language and culture. We truly hope the concerted efforts of educators, scholars, researchers, historians, linguists, volunteers and administrators will turn the table around and make room for new initiatives. If families and young scholars follow in step, we might be close to reversing the much dreaded danger of language loss. For the time being the sound of the language of the Walsers rings loud and clear on both sides of the Alps. The names of the flowers are far from being forgotten.
