and setting up training courses was not easy, since elders only speak the language fluently,
while younger people no longer do. But while this promotes the spreading of linguistic
skills among younger subjects, it also allows them to conduct much needed
research on language and traditions. The fact that now the language of the Walser has
an official recognition has exerted a boosting effect on the local population. It is to be
hoped families will soon start speaking their ancestral languages again, since only the
family can provide the permanent support needed for language preservation.
