SİNOP PROVINCE ARCHAEOLOGICAL PROJECT:
REPORT ON THE 2003 FIELD SEASON
Owen DOONAN*
Alex BAUER
Introduction
The Sinop Regional Archaeological Project conducted a two-week field season
of archaeological survey from 15 July to 29 July 2003, primarily in the Abdaloğlu and
Sorkum districts of Gerze ilçe. In the course of this survey seven archaeological sites
were documented within 42 systematically surveyed tracts in the Sorkum district (7 sites
recorded) and a 1 km 2 coastal site was mapped in the Abdaloğlu district (2 sites recorded)
in anticipation of follow-up surveys and geophysical studies in 2004. In the
systematically collected tracts the density of ceramic finds was recorded in each tract
based on weight and count of ceramic sherds. In addition to the new sites recorded in
the systematic survey, samples were obtained in single-day visits to the previously recorded
sites of Kocagöz (Demirci Köy, Sinop merkez), Karapınar (Nohutluk mevkii, Sinop
Merkez), Asar Tepesi (Sorkum Köy, Gerze ilçe) and Köşk Höyük (Gerze ilçe).
The development of new sampling techniques for surveying in the heavily forested
highlands was necessary in 2003 in order to be able to conduct successful future
research in this difficult region. Two collection strategies were applied under varying
conditions in order to obtain valid results under conditions of differing visibility.
1) Linear transects (1 meter wide at 10 meter intervals) were employed under
conditions of near optimum archaeological visibility (for the most part recently plowed
fields with minimal plant cover). This sampling strategy has been the predominant collection
method for the SRAP survey in the 1997-1999 seasons.
2) Sample boxes (2 m 2 in extent) were employed in conditions where vegetation
had to be cleared off the surface in order to achieve sufficient visibility for sampling
(Figs. 3, 4). This technique was employed in long-fallow fields and in forested tracts.
Sorkum (42 tracts, 7 loci: L03-01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 12, 13, 14)
During the 2003 season systematic archaeological surveys were conducted in
the Kayanın Başı, Demir Mah. and Yeymiş Düzü districts of Sorkum Köy (Fig. 5). A brief
visit was also paid to the height of Asar Tepe where several early Ottoman tombs
(L03-12 and a series of Hellenistic/ Roman cist graves (L03-13) that had been dug into
by illegal excavations. Three loci were identified in Kayanın Başı (Fig. 6). L03-01 ap-
