Subsamples of the determined ware groupings were then refired in a controlled
oxidizing atmosphere, beginning at 600°C and increasing in 100°C intervals to 1100°C.
These subsamples were then observed under a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM),
generally at a magnification of 3000X or greater to observe to clay particle size and the
results of sintering (or the melting together) between clay particles at the different temperatures.
Comparison between the original sample and the refired samples allowed
for an estimation to be made regarding the original firing temperature of each vessel,
and clues to the original firing atmosphere were indicated by changes in color during
refiring.
Finally, an Electron Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) attachment to the SEM allowed
for the elemental identification of inclusions in the clay matrix, which supplemented
the information recorded in the ware characterization.
Conclusions
The 2003 field season established the foundation for a series of systematic surveys
in the Sinop and Gerze areas to commence in the summer of 2005. Furthermore,
it gathered dating evidence for handmade ceramic assemblages for several sites
that are critical for understanding the economic and cultural organization of the Sinop
hinterland in pre-Greek times. The technological information on manufacture of handmade
ware types allows us to establish connections between the Sinop promontory
and other parts of the Black Sea region before the Greek colonial period.
