Dear professor, mr Usiskin, my respects. I am a mathematics teacher in a High school in
Greece and this year I am doing a master in the University of Athens. I have recently studied
your investigation,1982, and I honestly found it excellent. At this moment I am thinking of a
corresponding investigation as yours, using a sample of selected students in different schools
of my country. The reason I am writing this letter is to ask your permission for using your
test -which believe me is a precious help for my study -without any expenses. I would also
like to explain that this investigation is being executed for first time in Greece and it is certain
that your name and your test will be known all over Greece(I shall do my best about it). It
would be very kind of you to reply as soon as possible. Thank you for your time. With respect
Nick Tzifas
Subject: Re: van Hiele test
Dear Mr. Tzifas:
The van Hiele test is an appendix to the 231-page report "Van Hiele Levels and Achievement
in Secondary School Geometry". This report has not been available from us for well over a
decade but you should try to obtain a copy. It was available in the United States as ERIC reproduction
service document no. ED 220 288. The report includes quite a bit of information
that is critical to understanding the test, including the various ways in which van Hiele levels
can be derived from scores on the test. (Merely having the test would not be enough.) We are
happy to give permission to copy the van Hiele test for use in research without cost, but we
need (1) a description of the study, including an approximate number of copies you will
make. (2) assurance that you will write for copyright purposes on each copy: "© 1980 by the
University of Chicago. Reprinted with permission of the University of Chicago." (3) assurance
that we will receive a copy of any write-up of the results you find in your study. It is because
of requirement (3) that I am in possession of the doctoral dissertation of Ioannis Zachos
(Ph.D., University of Leeds School of Education, June 1994), entitled "Problem Solving in
Euclidean Geometry in Greek Schools". In this study Dr. Zachos translated and adapted the
