Company analyses in Cleaner Production projects like PREPARE (www.prepare.at) orECOPROFIT (www.oekoprofit-graz.at) have shown (Fresner 2002, Fresner 2001), thatalready in the phase of analyses many effective measures with little investment can be foundand implemented. Additionally, an abundance of new and emerging technologies areavailable to clean process solutions to reuse them in the galvanic plants. However, to ourexperience, all these options are rarely employed in a consistent, systematic approachguaranteeing maximum impact to reduce water and chemical consumption minimizing costand respecting the existing boundary conditions at an existing site.We see the approach as a vision based approach, an approach, that shows the ideal finalresult as a starting point for the optimisation. This ideal final result is defined by theappropriate rinsing criterium, minimal dragout, optimum useful bath time, economicallyfeasible measures for recycling, maximum external use of spent solutions. This vision can serve as a long term objective to focus the decisions about possible optionsfor change towards the most useful ones given the greater picture of the ideally feasibleresult.Table 2 shows potential solutions which will emerge from the different steps of theoptimisation procedure of ZERMEG.12
