II.Trade name<br />

A. All joint ventures must be licensed in writing<br />

before using the <strong>GE</strong> communicative trade<br />

names, primary <strong>GE</strong> trademarks, and <strong>GE</strong><br />

graphic system to identify themselves or the<br />

<strong>GE</strong> brand of products and services. The trademark<br />

license must be<br />

• approved by Corporate Trademark Counsel<br />

• based on model agreements (available from<br />

Corporate Trademark Counsel), which<br />

- state that <strong>GE</strong> has control over the quality<br />

of the products or services authorized<br />

to use the primary <strong>GE</strong> trademarks and<br />

<strong>GE</strong> graphic system<br />

- stipulate payment of compensation<br />

A. Use of “<strong>GE</strong>” or “General Electric”<br />

in a joint venture trade name<br />

1. To identify itself, a joint venture in which<br />

<strong>GE</strong> has a controlling (greater than 50 percent)<br />

interest may be licensed to use the<br />

name “<strong>GE</strong>” (or, in rare circumstances,<br />

“General Electric”) in its trade name with<br />

either<br />

• the trade name(s) of the joint venture<br />

partner(s): for example, “<strong>GE</strong> Fanuc”<br />

[Note: Normally, a joint venture may not<br />

use the name “<strong>GE</strong>” without the name(s)<br />

of the other partner(s).]<br />

• the trade name(s) of the joint venture<br />

partner(s) plus a generic name for<br />

the joint venture’s primary competence<br />

or product or service: for example,<br />

“<strong>GE</strong> Fanuc Automation”<br />

B. Before any such trade name or trademark<br />

license is granted to a joint venture, certain<br />

market considerations must be reviewed<br />

in accordance with <strong>GE</strong> Identity Program<br />

document 341, New Businesses Name &<br />

Trademark Practices.<br />

2. Preliminary approval of both<br />

• Corporate Trademark Counsel<br />

• Manager – Corporate Marketing<br />

<strong>Communication</strong>s<br />

and final approval of the Chairman or<br />

his delegate are required. Approval will<br />

ordinarily be granted only when <strong>GE</strong> has a<br />

controlling interest in the business. It may<br />

be granted in rare circumstances where<br />

<strong>GE</strong> has a lesser interest but nevertheless has<br />

a right to compel a subsequent change in<br />

the name of the business.<br />
