example on page 20. If the name contains two parts,<br />

such as a generic name and a geographic descriptor<br />

(for example, “<strong>GE</strong> Plastics France”), the geographic<br />

descriptor may be typeset in 11/12-point Univers<br />

48, if desired, with the balance of the name typeset<br />

in 11/12 Univers 68.<br />

A short communicative name appears on one line,<br />

provided it does not exceed a maximum length of<br />

•1 5 ⁄8 inches (41.5mm) on letterheads and envelopes<br />

• 7 ⁄8 inch (22mm) on business cards<br />

(one that does not exceed the maximum line<br />

lengths given above) is positioned above the Laser<br />

Line as shown in the example above. The end of<br />

the bottom stroke of the “E” in “<strong>GE</strong>” vertically aligns<br />

with the end of the Laser Line. If “<strong>GE</strong>” is not part of<br />

the name, the name begins 1 pica to the left of the<br />

end of the Laser Line.<br />

A certification statement, if used, is typeset<br />

to match the correct examples on page 20 using<br />

• on business cards, 8/9-point Univers 48<br />

• on letterheads, 8/9-point Univers 68<br />

A longer communicative name is typeset on two<br />

lines, aligned flush left.<br />

If a long name does not read easily on two lines,<br />

it appears on one line. For example, “<strong>GE</strong> Saudi”<br />

on one line and “Arabia” on a second line is<br />

difficult to read.<br />

A longer one- or two-line communicative name<br />

is positioned above the Laser Line so the right<br />

margin (the distance between the end of the name<br />

and the edge of the format) is no smaller than<br />

⁄8 inch (9.5mm) on letterheads and ⁄4 inch<br />

(6mm) on business cards.<br />

Note: On business cards, the Laser Line remains a<br />

standard length; it may not be shortened. As shown<br />

in the example of part of a business card above,<br />

longer names cannot be placed above the standard<br />

preprinted Laser Line so that the bottom stroke of<br />

the “E” in “<strong>GE</strong>” vertically aligns with the end of the<br />

Laser Line. Instead, longer names are placed at a<br />

minimum distance from the edge of the card.<br />
