Temporary Homeless
Assistance
What are the Temporary HA requirements?
The family must:
Be apparently eligible for CalWORKs or receiving
CalWORKs;
Meet the definition of homelessness and have
less than $100 in resources (i.e., cash on hand
[not to include the current month’s grant], bank
account, etc.); and
Obtain temporary shelter from a commercial
establishment (i.e., hotel, motel, paid shelter, etc.)
or from a person who has a history of renting
rooms/properties.
What action is taken when the
applicant/participant is determined eligible for HA
payments?
Applicants who are apparently eligible for CalWORKs
and participants who are homeless and request
temporary HA payments:
Must be issued or denied on the same day as the
request.
Must be seeking permanent housing and provide
verification of the search (CA 74).
Are eligible for up to 16 consecutive days.
Can receive $65 per night for an AU of 4 plus $15
for each additional person (up to $125 per night),
including the MFG child. The household members
must be CalWORKs eligible.
NOTE: When issuing a two-party check, if the
shelter cost is less than the Temporary HA
payment, the HREW must issue the
remaining benefit entitlement via the
applicant’s/participant’s EBT account.
Example
A homeless participant is eligible for a Temporary
HA payment of $455 for seven days. The hotel
where the participant will be staying charges $350
for seven days. Since the EW will be issuing a twoparty
check to the participant, the check will be made
